All this talk of Zatoichi (which I haven't yet had the pleasure of checking out but plan to check out real soon) reminds of a question that has been bugging me: My fiance swears that he has seen a Japanese (or maybe Hong Kong) martial arts movie, circa 1960's or so, in which the hero goes around pushing a baby carriage that is all tricked out with the latest James Bond-type weapons. I am pretty sure he's hallucinating, but he recalls it with fond clarity from his bygone youth. If anyone could confirm the existence of such a movie, and maybe supply me with a title, I would be most grateful. (Ray -- thanks in advance for indulging a somewhat off-topic question.) Regards, Mary Lou "Anything worth doing is worth doing to excess." ------------------------------ From: Brian McCarthy Date: Wed, 6 Jan 1999 14:41:40 -0500 (EST) Subject: eskrima: Prof V passed away yesterday Professor Florendo Visitacion passed away yesterday (Monday). Anyone who was fortunate to have crossed his path knows what a loss this is for the martial arts world. As someone who spent more than a few evenings being tossed around his living room, I'm deeply, deeply saddened. He was a warm, wonderful, giving human being who listened to everyone, and never had a bad thing to say about anybody. In all my travels in martial arts circles, I've never met anyone who had something bad to say about him - and to me, that speaks volumes. The essence of the man? He once told me that of all the things he'd done in his life, he was proudest of his daughter, who is a judge in New York City. My condolences to the Visitacion family. Old man, I'm gonna miss ya. Brian McCarthy ------------------------------ From: Kalki Date: Wed, 06 Jan 1999 13:20:56 -0600 Subject: eskrima: Shoulder to Ankle Rigs I'd like to hear some comments re: ankle rigs from anyone who has used one and has the kicking habit (pun intended). While I was living in Miami I trained briefly with an LEO who after commenting on ankle rigs told me to "Get used to it." I don't know that I want to use an ankle holster given the possibility that I may reflexively pop a kick out as part of handling a problem ... I have little confidence and less experience with such a scenario. Can anyone comment on ankle rigs and kicking? Given that we may be using the strong side leg to kick and the ankle rig will be on the other leg, I still have questions re: weapon retention if/when the fit hits the shan and we're not immediately trying to access the weapon, i.e., it's too late/the assilant/perp is too close for us to go through what it takes to access the tool. Ray, is this fair game for discussion? If yes, then I'd like to consider all kicks as being delivered below the waist. Be well, Mik ------------------------------ From: Kalki Date: Wed, 06 Jan 1999 13:38:02 -0600 Subject: eskrima: Drunken Style Considered the most physically demanding of CMA due to the seemingly awkward, uncommon postures and motions. Usually taught only after mastery of other "stuff" that yielded the type of strength and agility required to do the unorthodox. Not just showy stuff to please a crowd ... moreso strategy to mislead/confuse an adversary The "drunken" part itself was/is just the vehicle for getting to the appropriate quality of movement/coordination. Makes me think of Tai Chi Chuan systems that still teach the fast "stuff" (Combat-Oriented Traditional Tai Chi Chuan). It can be difficult to maintain the proper timing, coordination, etc when practiced at fighting speed because some of the movements are counter-intuitive, e.g., adhering/not retreating/etc. A person who has never done any throwing will not be able to handle "Snake Creeps Down" for example, or be able to do it "real time" to dump someone (like a fireman's throw) at fighting speed. Drunken styles do quickly lend themselves to the theatrical though, e.g., in Chinese Opera, Wu-Kung (Monkey) after drinking all of de wine up dere in de hebbin' y'all. Gotta be very strong to do Drunke stuff right -- or so I'm told. A closer look at a drunken form will reveal that altho it looks "out of control" it demands -greater- control. 'Nuff. Mahalo, BR ------------------------------ From: "Dave Huang" Date: Wed, 06 Jan 1999 14:07:58 PST Subject: eskrima: Kukri RE: Kukri From: Dave Huang (dhlw@hotmail.com) In response to Guro John Chow's Kukri question, there are many suppliers of kukris, only 2 of which I have personal experience with. 1) Cold Steel: Endorsed by Prof. Gyi, I have handled and played with the Kukri they sell (the new one, not the LTC) and it feels pretty good. I am not a big fan of Kraton grips. I hear that after a lot of hard use, the checkering eventually wears off. I also hear that the Kukri is rather difficult to sharpen in the field (these are hearsay enduser reports, not personal experience). The sheath is not of really exceptional quality, I would go with a custom kydex if available. 2) Himilayan Imports: Although not officially endorsed by Prof. Gyi, these are the real deal from Nepal. Bill Martino is an exceptionally nice guy to deal with, and his kukri are issued to military units. The sheath is an incredible buffalo hide, beautiful and functional. It comes complete with the traditional smaller knives. I have seen really pretty knives before, and the Himilayan Imports is one of the nicest. To contact Himilayan Imports, go to www.knifeforums.com and go to the Himilayan Imports discussion group. Also, there is a side to side comparison with both the Cold Steel and the Himilayan Import Kukri on the site someplace. For a great training kukri, I would send, without hesitation, my knife to Rob Burgee at EDGESS. He used to do custom work, don't know if he still does. Growing up in Brooklyn, I knew him not as an instructor, but as a neighbor. Every so often, I would visit the bookstore he had in his dojo on Atlantic Avenue and we would talk on the subject of whatever book I happened to purchase. Three of his senior black belt students were close friends of mine, so I was indirectly exposd to his original Veejitsu system (before it was revised as Vee-arnis-jitsu.) Twenty years later, in 1989, he guest-taught a seminar for me at the New York Ninpokai where he amazingly made his techniques and philosophies uniquely relevant to my ninjutsu students. At one point, when he blocked me, it felt as if he had a radius and ulna made of steel. He must have been about 78 or 79 then. The martial arts world will be poorer and emptier with his passing.
