I've searched the net but came up with nothing. I'm particulary interested in Pekiti-tirsia or Serrada but any FMA adress is welcome. Thanks, John e-mail: jjacobs@xs4all.nl ------------------------------ From: Kalki Date: Fri, 08 Jan 1999 20:16:25 -0600 Subject: eskrima: Ki Finger What some people say about "ki finger" and the like reminds me of the first time I met an Aikido instructor who was demonstrating "the unbendable arm" for a yoga group. I (nobody special) bent his arm and he couldn't bend mine. Another incident involved a Tai chi specialist who described to me at length the connection between the Earth, his chi and his punch ... and also how he could read my mind and know what I was going to do if/when we sparred. So "Vamos a ballettte?" and we went a few rounds. He poppped me a few times (gleefully) with a sidestepping straight punch over my weak arm side. I got ticked off at his attitude and slammed a few round kicks to his gut ... whereupon he asked me incredulously: "What are you USING?" My response: "Foot." NEway, my understanding of "ki finger" is simply that omitting the index from the action of grasping an assailant's limb or a weapon simply allows for a more flexible grip. When the index finger is included in gripping it encourages a perpendicular grip, i.e., it encourages a right angle relationship between your forearm and the weapon, or arm/wrist being grabbed. Once you leave the index finger out of the action, for practical purposes your grip will probably not diminish in strength (may even be more secure since it's flexible) and the line of the grasp can be allowed to vary from the usual perpendicular angle to an almost linear relationship with the forearm. Watch a Korean master with a staff, a Japanese swordsman or an Indian (India) club wielder ... they will all use this method of gripping the weapon. Perhpas there are other reasons for the "ki finger" stuff, but this is my only rationale for using this type of hold. I've always thought that over-emphasis on ethe finger makes it vulnerable to attack/breakage/etc. I simply relax the index finger out of the action where appropriate. This can promote a more -maintainable- grip which may appear to be or actually be more secure/stronger. Easy to compare. Start with the Yellow Pages(divided in many sections and counties in Illinois), go to Yahoo website and check out a copy of the Chicago Reader for advertisements. I hope this helps. Chicago has a hodge-podge menu of Martial Arts Schools and groups. Some are unlisted, not on the Yellow pages and do not advertise. Good Luck.
