The sticks came out great! I was just wondering if there were any other methods of hardening rattan. There are two companies that I know of that sell raw rattan. They both cut the rattan to whatever size the customer wants. The rattan comes in 8' to 9' lengths, and in many different diameters. I had them cut to two sizes: 26" sticks and 28" sticks, with a diameter of 1 3/8". Thanks, John e-mail: jjacobs@xs4all.nl >> There are many reputable Silat schools in the Netherlands - I'd take advantage of studying at one. Many Silat styles also include tongkat (the stick) too. I had the privilege of meeting him this past summer at Tuhon Mike Sayoc's ranch in Florida, at the Sayoc Clan Sama-Sama1998 (Gathering). I was extremely impressed with his espada y daga techniques and his abilty to use the kabayo latigo(horse whip). Guro Raf is also very knowledgeable of the FMA history and regional styles. Along with being a 3rd generation inheritor of his family system, he has trained with Sayoc family under the guidance of Tatang Baltazar Sayoc for many years. Putting all of that into perspective during the Sama- sama, what stood out in my mind to top it all off was his extremely large sandata(weapon) collection from the Phillippines. He is truly proficient at what he does, which is practicing and teaching the Pambuan Arnis Tulisan Caballero style of FMA. If any of you get a chance, try to catch one of his seminars in Florida. Patrick C. Consing Sayoc Kali-Silak Association of NY ------------------------------ From: Date: Mon, 11 Jan 1999 09:05:02 -0500 Subject: eskrima: Those "padded" sticks.... Good morning, all... Just a story/warning/question (wow, all three in one!!)... My instructor just picked up those padded training sticks (they're a PVC-type material, covered in foam padding). Myself and another instructor decided to try a little full contact stickfighting with these babies. Okay, stupid mistake #1, I was only wearing Eye goggles; I naturally assumed that the sticks were soft enough to prevent damage. Well, to make a long story short, within the first 5 seconds, he and I both fired a #1 strike at each other. Our sticks met, and apparently, his stick bent and shattered, sending PVC shards flying everywhere, including right down my right hand. 2 gashes and 6 stitches later, I was back in class the following day. My question to all of you is; What is your take on those padded sticks? Do you think it's a good idea to use them in initial full-contact fighting? Have you heard of this kind of equipment failure, or did I just use a faulty piece? I was thinking that the padded sticks would be a good, safe, way to introduce me to the format of full-contact stickfighting, while minimizing injury (boy, was I wrong).... After using these sticks, I've come to realize this; to push ourselves in the martial arts, we must have equipment that will not hinder our health or our development while training. Any comments from the esteemed gallery out there would be much appreciated...
