My typing has suffered due to bad fingers from fighting with rattan sticks. In our martial arts classes, we have many students that are professionals that rely on their fingers, faces, and legs to make a living (typing, public speaking, walking or standing to teach classes). A person=27s living should override their hobby and sometime the instructor must protect people from themselves (lack of strike control, knowing when the are over their heads, etc). =20 Should the Filipino arts be practice with live blades rather than rattan sticks? Blades hurt when the hit you...and might cripple you.=20 We are probably not training hard enough when we use sticks instead of live blades. Enough time fighting with rattan sticks and very light protective equipments will also leave you injured/crippled. It=27s all a matter of degree of training risk. Thus --- the use of the bokken, padded spear tips, rattan stick and staffs instead of hardwoods and metal. I don=27t believe in using live blade in training....dull the blade (I know when I would have severed muscles in my forearm). There is no reason for someone to cripple themselves in weapons training . . . we have too many other training options. =20 I remember judging fights with good training partner by the number of welts/bruises at the end of the stick match...of course it was sometime too close to call and we had to do it again. :-) Many other have =22retired=22 from that type of fighting due to the possibility of crippling injuries. There are just too many other fun options. The purpose of study martial arts is to enjoy yourself and learn the ability to defend yourself . . if you cannot hold or swing a weapon due to broken or nicked bones, or can=27t move due to torn knees during your training =AF you will certainly be at a disadvantage when having to actually defend yourself.=20 Can you go overboard? Of course. But those of us that train in an art for an extended period of time have the knowledge to know how much is too much and how much is too little FOR US. But, most people have to go to work the next day...and we are only given one body.=20 Keep training, Jeff Allen (jallen=40unt.edu) ------------------------------ From: "Dave Huang" Date: Thu, 14 Jan 1999 09:29:43 PST Subject: eskrima: Re: Not getting hit RE: Padded Sticks From: Dave Huang Someone wrote: why do we need padded sticks?....are we afraid of getting hurt while practicing an art based on blades?.....if so, take up tkd or something that is non weapon oriented.....the purpose of training with unpadded weapons is to instill the mindset of avoidance.....you know they hurt when they hit, so dont get hit......leighan - ---------------------------------------------- That's easier said than done. Training at various levels of intensity allows you to grow in your art. Full bore, no rules sparring can not be done on a full time basis without consequences (Guro Crafty, was that your thumb in the MAI article?). If you have not been hit by a padded weapon, you probably don't realize that they still hurt. The excellent Lameco padded sparring stick (still available from Lameco) will leave bruises if you spar without protection. Why use padded sticks? Longevity of training is one reason. Lastly, as far as TKD is concerned, I understand that some high level guys in some organizations do unpadded full contact sparring (I could be wrong, I don't do TKD). I know a TKD guy whom you do not want to spar full contact unless you are wearing some padding. Everything has its place and purpose and circumstances which maximize its efficacy. Leave 6 inches of stick free of insulation for regular grip. Tape is not completely wrapped around stick, it is wrapped in 4-5 sections like nodes on a regular rattan stick. In respect to what Mr. Allen Eastwood wrote recently, I can guarantee you will not lose respect for the stick but to expand on what he wrote, IMO, Nothing Is Safe For Full Contact! As far as stick failure, this padded stick never fails. The only thing that fails is the padding. Depending on use the padding will have to be taped again or replaced. Why fencing masks? Why sticks? etc. ad nauseam. Perhaps it's just good to be able to train some things without the consequences of getting hit -all of the time-. I own some of the Umpad training sticks via Guro Finder. I use them when training with my wife. That's OK, eh? Reduces her fear and reduces the likelihood that she will quit if/when hit. Also reduces the damage to my hands due to wild strikes. One of these days she'll be trading whacks with me using any/all of the impact weapons "stuff" that I've got. Until then, no problem, we use the padded sticks until she's comfortable and capable. I would do the same with young kids, definitely ... I've still got a scar from a 1st grade buddy's enthusiasm with those metal guns we used to play cowboys and indians ... like Calvin & Hobbes: "CLUNK!" "YOWch!!!". Easy to get unnecessary scars and/or other damage. Easy to prevent unnecessary scars and/or other damage. Consider the surgeon who wants to train but is ++concerned about his/her hands, etc. ... we be "open-minded", yes? This past weekend the US Open TKD championships were held in the LA area. Elite level competitors attended from around the globe. From the Danish team, a 25 year-old 2nd Dan was fighting and took a back spin heel kick to the side of the neck. It apparently broke his neck. He quickly went into a deep coma and died shortly thereafter. Never forget that life is short. BR ------------------------------ From: Date: Thu, 14 Jan 1999 14:24:33 EST Subject: eskrima: Re: Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V6 #14 Re: padded sticks? I disagree, I think that padded sticks are very important to your training if used correctly. First off an introduction is in order my name is David Gould and i`m an instructor in Lameco Eskrima and a graduate of De Campo Uno- Dos-Tres Orehenal under the Late Punong Guro Edgar G. Sulite. As well i`ve trained pekiti-tirsia under Tuhon Leo T. Gaje in the Philippines. Back to my point before in 1982 and the rest of the eighties when I would spar I would wear headgear, elbow-pads, knee-pads, hockey gloves and anything else that I could find for protection. I started to develop alot of bad habbits i.e. giving a head shot for a guaranteed knee shot, I knew that if I got hit it would`nt hurt because of the headgear. Also I wasn`t in too much of a hurry to get out of range after I charged with an attack, again if I got hit what was the big deal I was protected. It wasn`t until I began to train privately with Punong Guro Sulite in 1992 that all of these bad habbits caught up to me. Not so much in the Lameco Curriculum but more specifically in the De Campo 1-2-3 Orehenal curriculum it was mandatory sparring with punong Guro Sulite after the training session had ended. We would spar with Padded sticks alone no headgear or protective equipment of any kind was allowed. The first few times he took it easy on me the third time he broke my knuckle one of many that would be broken by him in the future. With no protection to keep me from getting hurt for the first time I really had to think things out a little longer to evaluate the risk involved, needless to say it was a different game and one that I was`nt used to playing. But I have to admitt that I was`nt rushing in like I did in the early day`s. Quite a few times I got caught in the head and face lucky for me that all I had to deal with was bumps, scratches and bruises he could`ve easily broken my head. Training with the padded stick placed me in an arena where training brushes up against reality, it allowed me an opportunity to be placed in that environment not facing possible death if I were hit in the head but rather only bumps and bruises. It was a generous reminder of what would happen if I make a mistake in a real life threatening situation getting knocked around but not facing the full consequence of what could happen. After a year or so I learned to get in do what I had to do and get out I always anticipate a counter for every strike that I throw and most important I knew what it felt like for someone to try and hit me in the head with no protection on and it really heightened my awareness to the enth degree. In 1995 I advanced to level where Punong Guro started sparring me with light rattan, no headgear or equipment and we agreed that if the head was open we would take the shot with control a few more bumps and bruises but again my awareness was heightened. In november 1996 I graduated the system and at that point we were sparring with medium weight rattan no headgear or equipment. Just a few months later my Teacher would die in the Philippines and it devastated me but life seems to continue on, he`s missed with each and every day that passes. I owe him alot because it`s him who is responsible for the way that I move today. And now I feel as comfortable standing in front of anyone with a weapon with no protection on as I ever did before dressed up as the "michelin man" with headgear and equipment. I think thats what the Pilipino warrior arts are all about, confidense in who you are and knowing what you`re capable of when it counts. That all started with padded sticks, so again I feel that they can be quite helpful if trained correctly... Mabuhay!!! at paalam.
