Could someone please comment on the legalities and practicalities of taking personal-use knives into British Columbia, carrying them there, and bringing them back into the U.S.? Mainly, I'm interested in B.C. and Vancouver carry laws. So far, my experience on the "importing" is: - --A friend had his (U.S. purchased) balisong confiscated at the Manitoba/Minnesota border by the U.S. folks. - --I declared a kukri coming back into Washington and had no trouble. [Loki, maybe you can help with this one?] Thanks for your time, David ------------------------------ From: Date: Tue, 19 Jan 1999 22:19:50 EST Subject: eskrima: Re: Thesz << Do you have the publisher or ISBN for Lou's autobio? >> Ray, Try:http://www.twc-online.com/thesz/contents.html Regards, Travis Kilap@aol.com ------------------------------ From: Michael Koblic Date: Wed, 13 Jan 1999 00:49:27 -0800 Subject: eskrima: Blisters >Subject: eskrima: Methods for Toughening My Palms > >Does anyone here have any suggestions on methods that I can use to toughen the >palms of my hands? The shiny sticks are the worst, I prefer to leave mine slightly rough. I have seen a study (cannot for the love of me remember where) purporting to show that a teatment of feet with an aluminium-containing anti-perspirant for three days reduces the incidence of blisters on long marches. I wonder if it would work on one's palms... If so, please provide their phone numbers, addresses, etc. Thanks in advance, Kelvin Williams kel620@aol.com ------------------------------ From: Date: Tue, 19 Jan 1999 23:17:42 EST Subject: eskrima: Knife fighting I really love the strips and knife controls I see in seminars, and on video's. I tend to think that training with the standard, wooded, aluminum, or plastic blades allows you to do things that you would not do in real life. I am wondering if those instructors would strip as fast, even with someone dummying for them, if they were using a serrated Spyderco Police model. I still like practicing the disarms, but I would concentrate less on the the back hand strips and thumb controls, and put more emphasis on controlling the arm, and going to armbar, branch up (americana), or branch down (kimura), ala Steve Plinck's drill from Serak. Anyone have any experience with the serrated edge while disarming angle #1 dagger grip? One story (unconfirmed) that I heard a couple of years ago was that Steven Siegal was making such an "unchokable" claim, and that "Judo Gene" LaBell took him out on a movie set. It was a beautiful thing..... > >Tony C>> To this and all which preceded it, it's hard to say if it was a beautiful, or even factual, thing. Tony C. says he heard this from Gotch and so it is not hearsay. Perhaps not, but it is highly subjective and unverified. As to the Katch training regimen, etc. as outlined by others on this list, I have no doubt that it can produce good fighters--IF they survive there own practice. Training one day and needing to recover for the next week sound a bit dubious. Finally, I liked what Carl Fung said about the choke. Who was trying to choke these Katch guys? The farmer next door? Sounds like Houdini's "punch me in the stomach" trick--let me get ready first and let you not be a trained puncher.
