Again, I am sure that there are many tough Katch guys out there and this message is not personal, it is theoretical/strategic. On the position vs. submission debate. Position would seem to be a crucial prerequisite for a variety of reasons. If you have position, and can hold it, you have all day to get your submission. If you look for a submission from a "bad" position--being mounted let's say--you may or may not get it, but if you do not get it in about one second you stand a good chance of being pounded. >> When you really understand the mechanics of a submission you can can flow into it as you gain position. It is a SiGung Lee type of shortcut to the problem. There is no question that you should have position and submission. This is just no reason to get these simultaneously. A lockflow is an example of how you can change to meet demand. True position before submission is an easy way to show a new student a technique of in a way guaranteeing your lock but properly putting yourself in the position to have a lock. In another sort of way try your stick sparring without hitting your opponant. Just go for proper bodyposition. Then hit when you want to hit. This is like isolating tools (leadhand leadfoot in boxing). This is a sort of position before striking to increase your chances that your strike will be good. To many who stick spar flail hoping to hit something. Watch your targeting improve next time you spar by hitting 30% less and positioning 30% more. AS you grow you can do both simultaneously. So it is not that position is not important to Gotch Submission Wrestling. It is just that Gotch has a 1000 locks so it looks like he blows off position. His system flows from look to lock just like you do in subrada any counter for any counter. carl ------------------------------ From: "SARVER, CINDY" Date: Thu, 21 Jan 1999 08:31:09 -0800 Subject: eskrima: Blaise Loong seminar in So Cal All, Blaise Loong will be giving a seminar in Costa Mesa, California on February 27. Too many people make seriously mistaken assumptions, such as just because the philosophy is submission first, that there aren't a wide range of positions and leverage techniques. This is really anything but true. Just look at the various wrestlers to compete in assorted NHB events. Even if they lost, or only won by decision, they very often maintained a position of dominance throughout the match. Even as far back as Gracie vs Severn, Severn was indeed on top, and were he at least a little more competent in both striking and submissions, he could at least have provided a more significant battle, rather than merely riding that brazilian! Catch as catch can carries with it all the positioning skills & use of leverage that freestyle wrestling uses, plus an arsenal of very violent, and creative, submission holds. Perhaps more importantly, the catch philosophy emphasises constant improvisation of submission techniques. Second of all, regarding Tony C's ability to resist chokes. Almost everyone I saw trying to choke Tony knew how to apply a proper choke, myself included. However, Tony had strengthened his neck in a fashion which allowed him to resist the hold longer than the vast majority of the population, which allowed one of two possibilities to manifest -- either the strangler would give up when his or her arms tired, allowing Tony to dominate the situation, or Tony could use the extra seconds to apply a truly horrible hook, breaking the choke. So in other words, yeah he wasn't exactly 100% resistant to chokes, but he did have the ability to resist the choke for at least twice as long as myself (and I am a hard-necked individual myself). ------------------------------ From: Date: Thu, 21 Jan 1999 12:07:05 -0800 Subject: eskrima: stickbags I have bags made by a member of this list. All Canadian provinces have the same criminal code laws. In Canada balisongs are 'gravity' knives and are prohibited weapons along with switchblades...illegal to own, have or keep anywhere! At this time clipits are probably technically illegal because they can be opened by holding the handle and snapping the wrist so as to open it - proving it is a gravity knife. It is the knife that can be opened this way, not the method of opening it, that is illegal. No one is getting busted for clipits yet, tho. Punch daggers that have the shaft turned (twisted) so as to fit between the fingers crosswise (perpendicular) to the cutting edge of the blade are illegal. Other two-edged or large knives or knives with blood grooves will be classed as weapons but not prohibited, ie. you can carry them but they must be in plain sight. Any knife that is legal but out of sight becomes a weapon when you tell a cop that you are carrying it for self defence and so you get busted for an illegal carry, concealment. The only illegal sticks or canes in Canada are sword canes and the metal telescoping baton that opens by means of a spring, if it is a centrifugal opener, it is legal tho may be confiscated 'til we find out' and you never get it back. Most important - NO FIREARMS!
