The martial arts stores sold a small bag that could about 6 non-padded sticks. They also started making them out of vinyl which I really didn't like. So I borrowed a sewing machine and made my own Escrima bag. It could hold over three padded sticks and six non-padded sticks. It is designed to hold 26" sticks but it wouldn't be difficult to make one for longer sticks. The material I used is nylon which is the same as my Gerber multitool holder. Not sure what grade of nylon that is though. I put a heavy duty zipper on the opening but I considered adding buckles later. I added a front pocket to carry a couple tabaks and raquetball goggles. I put a couple adjustable nylon straps on so I could wear the bag like a backpack. I also put a hanging loop so I could hang it on a coat hook. One of the guys that I trained with thought it was a commercially-made product and a couple other students expressed a desire to buy one from me. One person wanted alterations such a thicker straps with pads. I have considered creating more but I'm not sure about it. If I made more bags then I would eventually experiment with a couple different designs. To avoid doing the sewing myself, I would probably create a pattern and have a seamstress sew it together. This would also result in a professionally sewn product. Is there really a big demand for Escrima bags? I got a side control with what I call a "self-choke" (not really a choke but where e.g. you pull his right hand over his left shoulder from behind) and looked to put in a silat choke I knew wherein the other hand is inserted and the edge placed against the carotid and the whole thing cinched up. It had worked pretty nicely on various people and I felt pretty smug. However, when I applied it against Roger, he just kind of looked up at me and said, "That's kind of uncomfortable, but I think you'd be better going for the armbar." Knucklehead that I am, I asked to test it further and he allowed me to apply it full blast but could not make it work. 2) Early in my explorations of the stick choke I call "the nutcracker" I ran into Eric Paulsen one night over at Boxing Works. Eric always shows me some cool move to play with and I wanted to reciprocate and so showed him a combo leading into nutcracker. As I applied the nutcracker however, it failed to persuade. Hmmm. Time to research some more. The lesson I draw from these and similar experiences is that there is a big difference between grapplers necks and those of most of the rest. Roger Machado does not do weights, and I am not aware of Eric Paulsen doing any major neck routine-- certainly not like Rocky's dad's routine outlined the other day! Yet the experience of grappling regularly involves getting one's head yanked on, getting attacked with chokes, and using them as tools. A certain kinesthetic (sp?) awareness as well as muscular strength develops as a consequence. Without grappling however, most people lack the sense of how to tap into their neck muscles. No doubt everyone on this list can make a fist or flex a biceps, but I suspect most non-grapplers cannot flare the neck on command. I suppose that anyone can be choked, but when one finds both phenomenal neck strength and skill in one package, e.g. Rigan Machado, that supposition can seem pretty theoretical. Yep. Also tried choking the sucker, but it is one of those things that must be following your dad's old neck routine... :) Ray Terry raymail@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com ------------------------------ From: "Joe & Doro Hironaka" Date: Sat, 23 Jan 1999 17:39:53 -0800 Subject: eskrima: turtle up I may be wrong, but isn't this exactly what you are not supposed to do? Herrman" Date: Sun, 24 Jan 1999 11:50:43 +0100 Subject: eskrima: cold weather Normally in mid-january those of us in winter climates are all bundled up - heavy winter coats, hats, gloves, etc. This kind of weather induced dress requirement seems to present a number of difficulties in deploying a knife in a self-defense situation. I'm curious as to what types of solutions the list may have come up with to deal with this potential problem. It seems like gloves are not really an option if you want to open a folder and maintain a secure grip. If you choose not to wear gloves your hands will probably end up in your pockets. If your hands are in your pockets, and your knife is not, can you still bring the knife into play? If your knife is a folder clipped to your pants waistband or pants pocket, and your jacket extends below the waist, as many winter coats do, your blade is not easily accessible. To get around this you might carry a blade clipped to your coat (or in the pocket). If you take off your coat when indoors you now have to transfer your blade or leave it in the coat. Transfering the blade could prove awkward; leaving a blade in your coat presents other potential problems. Anyone have any suggestions? Looking forward to your feedback.
