To answer Mik, yes, it can cross the BBB. Glia can produce large amounts of lactate when under stress (e.g. ischemic or toxic), and if that were not removed from the brain it could accumulate and cause trouble at high concentration. In more general terms, molecules as small as lactate tend to have no problems with the BBB. It is not a classical tight junction barrier, as you find in the GI tract. I find the state-dependent learning more convincing, but as far as I know little is known about the neurophysiology which underlies state-dependent learning, so I can't commit to anything. I noticed two for sale on ebay.com. They also have a few old Filipino ("Pacific Islands") swords on auction. Hello All! About size and strength.... I think strength matters much more than size. Back when I used to train TKD under Kwanjangnim Larry Lam( Studio Kicks Martial Arts Academy, Los Gatos/ Saratoga), he and the Sabunim( sp?) Aram Almanieh weren't the biggest guys( both were under 5'10" and 155 lbs.), but they sure had a good deal of strength. Trust me, my ribs are living proof. I remember seeing Aram blast people( me, too) at least ten feet across the studio.... He grew up being Irani/ Persian in the 80's, so naturally he was jumped almost every day after school. I think that's where he got his explosiveness from. One more thing.... Is David Carradine for real??? I know he has a show, and more recently a book, but did he ever, really, pursue any Gung Fu training( other than "by-the-mail-black-belt-programs")??? Mabuhay Ang Eskrima! I'm still trying to remember whether or not lactate crosses the blood-brain barrier . >> Although I have looked into three books I could find any details about tha= t. The only thing I have found was that the barrier is more crossable for lipophil struktures than for hydrophil. Lactat must be hydrophil as far as= I could remember. But if lactat got produced in brain (Mik second mail), it = must be able to pass the BBB. The kidneys and the bladder are the only areas wi= th can do gluconeogenese and rebuild lactat to glucose. Then lactat must go through the BBB, unless it is only a "one-way"-barrier. Anyway, I do not believe that lactat causes any bigger direct effects in brain, too. The theory about stress is a good answer, therefore I think th= at lactat has an indirect influence on the brain via causing a stress-situati= on in the hormonal system. Another thing could be possible, when training like Grandtuhon Gaje=B4s me= thod. I could imagine that because of the hard physical stress the brain gets to= o less oxygen. Basically lactat is build up, when the level of oxygen is low= er than the glucose-burning (also fatty acids and proteins) needs. Perhaps a = lack of oxygen will force the stress situation and will cause a shortage of it = in brain. At the end I want to give a more basic idea of the exhausting training of Grandtuhon Gaje. As most people know, FMA especially Pekiti Tirsia has/hav= e a big emphasis on FLOWING. The movements are trained very fluidly. Through m= y own experiences with teaching I know that there are a lot of people who ar= e not able to relax. Tensed muscles are hindering the ones that should do th= e work (protagonist/antagonist). When the muscles get powered out the restistance of the other muscles get less. The hole body is now flowing. And, in the process of learing movements what could be more important than repetition.
