You can't use a show as a showcase for two things at once, not when they're so different in nature. I personally couldn't ever buy into Arsenio as an action star anyway. Picture Arsenio saying "Go ahead punk, make my day!", or "You're the disease, and I'm the cure.". It just doesn't work. I wonder if Arsenio was an attempt by the network to draw more viewers, since most people had probably never heard of Samo before this. The fight scenes have definitely gone down, but even with that and trying to fit a square peg into a round hole (Arsenio), I'll still watch just to see Kelly Hu. She can arrest me anytime! 8o) Dave dwf@computerpackages.com ------------------------------ From: Date: Tue, 16 Mar 1999 08:06:20 -0800 Subject: eskrima: Martial Law update /tapered sticks >Is it just me or has the quality of the episodes declined since they >became a comedy vehicles for Sammo's co-star? The MA displays seem mudane >now in comparison with the earlier stuff. It is difficult to maintain quality on a weekly production schedule. They have less time to choreograph and shoot later shows than they did getting ready for the beginning of the series. From my own experience, I know that it can take 1-2 days of shooting for a fight scene, and a full day's work, if you are lucky, will give you as much as 2 minutes on film (and that's for anything, not complicated stuff like action scenes!) From the cbs.com/martiallaw website: The final fight sequence was accomplished in a single day. Tong praised his Hong Kong crew at this point, "An American crew couldn't do as much as we could in one day. We only have one day to film these big fight scenes, the kind of scene I would spend ten days working on for a Jackie Chan film. When you watch Martial Law and see a short fight scene, that's only because we didn't have enought time to do more." Samo watch - This coming Monday, March 22, Samo will be do a cameo on "LA Doctors". >I wonder if people would give me their views on tapered sticks. My >instructors got one, so his and hi, they do handle well but don't last as >long because the tapering strips the skin of the rattan. Apparently it's a >Balintawak trick? When I was in Cebu, the fighters from Bohol were the ones using tapered hardwood sticks, about 30" long. I haven't seen this done with rattan. Ron Harris sells some very nice tapered kamagung sticks. My first pair broke quickly (from the drier climate here, I believe) but the ones I have now are holding up better. IMHO, tapered sticks to have a nice balance, and in theory the lighter weight at the end makes them quicker. Offsetting this, however, is a loss of mass, so they seem to lose some power, especially noticeable when blocking strong strikes. *** If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, riddle them with bullets*** Jeff "Stickman" Finder stickman@autobahn.org ------------------------------ From: Date: Tue, 16 Mar 1999 12:14:28 EST Subject: eskrima: Ron Balicki Seminar Ron Balicki in Seminar: Thanks to everyone who came to the Colorado seminar. Don't miss it. IMO, the previous episode with Master Uddin has been the best episode so far. Martial Law: I agree with Mike Koblic that the quality of the episodes of Martial Law (ML) have declined since more emphasis was placed on comedy. I like Arsenio Hall but on ML I wish he was not. BTW, did anybody see Sammo doing sinawali in the restaurant with the big spoons in a recent episode that featured Shannon Lee? Holyfield: Indeed Holyfield lost but I'm glad Lewis did not win. Lewis is a boring fighter. I would have been impressed if he would have pulled a "Leon Spinks" and went crazy on Holyfield and knocked him out. Now if Holyfield would have used FMA (sulsihan, Largo Mano) he would have won. Eric Betts: In the May issue of Inside Kung Fu on page 86 there is a picture of Eric Betts holding two sticks. The caption for this picture states that this is a kali training scene from an upcoming movie. Does anybody have any info on this movie? And in the case of the tonfas, all you >had to do was keep them at long range and take pot shots, or so it >was believed. Interesting perspective. One must wonder how many of these people had faced those weapons. They can be defended against if you know what to expect. But if you face these weapons for the first time and you are facing a competent practitioner you are going to get hit.... alot. Once you learn how the weapon moves you will see that the strikes no matter the weapon are all the same. The only difference is in the method of delivery and power. For instance a person using a staff will likely twirl it so as to confuse your eyes and keep you guessing which end is going to hit you. The angles will be the same and so should your defenses. The only difference should be in the way you play the distance game. With longer weapons like the staff you want to maintain distance till he strikes then your going to want to parry his strike and close the distance to counter. Against a sword\shinai lateral movement is very important. I have noticed that the Japanese Stylist is partial to the overhead power strike. So I usually sidestep\parry and close. Then use my daga to turn his body into a pin cushion. My instructor uses as many different weapons on us as he can to get us used to facing almost any traditional weapon. I have also fought against a friend who loves to use shinai. Let me tell you my instructor is pretty mean with a pingga (filipino staff)along with damn near anything else you can think of. One of his favorite things to do is match up against us using doble balisong. I always lose. Well enough of that. I think I got a bit long winded. But to sum it up I'd like to quote my instructor in saying " This is all easy to say but hard to do.". Your friend in training, Big Joe A. "The only constant in LIFE is Change." -N.B.S.- p.s. Another quote of my instructor.
