Thai,....Nanfah,...Peter Aerts Grappling,......Well, we need to get a tourney with Ze Mario, Rickson, Rigan, and Kerr togther. Many fighters feel Jean J Machado was the best at Abu Dhabi. By the way, Kimura was tapped by Karl Gotch lots of times, and the Gracies avoided Gotch like the plague in Brazil years ago. This is an interesting question. I am sure there are Silat men who are frightening(jungle fighting against swords and guns, etc.) Oh well.......I'd like to see more opinions. But wait!!! look up in the sky is it a bird, is it a plane, no its the great Don King money machine Iron Mike ( Jail house blues ) Tyson, Yes Iron Mike will revenge and restore Americas glory, by beating that Brit senseless, restoring his dignity ( and cash flow ) at the same time, all the while making Don King richer and richer. And guess what, we foolish Americans will pay to watch it. Looks like I''ll be in Flag staff Arizona, April 10th 1999, for a one day seminar on CDM, covering some single stick/ seghetis, empty hand tuboks, Ukrainian leg locks/ froging and gophering. As soon as I have a contact Name and number I will post it and put it on my web page. http://www.ameritech.net/users/rocpas/Main_1.htm Rocky Pasiwk Founder of Cuentadad DeMano Chief Instructor Anciong Ba'cons Balintawak Lincoln Park, Mi. ------------------------------ From: "J H" Date: Tue, 16 Mar 1999 20:25:00 PST Subject: eskrima: Re: American NDN fighting styles Hello All! Being NDN( Western Band Tsalagi), I really enjoyed seeing an inquiry about NDN fighting styles... To be honest, the only fighting style that I know of being open to the public is one taught by Tom Brown Jr. He is a world reknowned tracker/ survivalist( and an author, too!) He was trained by Stalking Wolf, a traditional tracker of the Apache people for a good ten years, or more. As far as I know, the fighting style was primarily developed for hunting wild game. The primary weapon that is used in this system, is a staff that's about the size of your average walking stick( about shoulder height). They also use throwing sticks( for hunting smaller game), bow & arrow, and many other survival oriented weapons. I think the best tool that one could inherit from this system is the ability to survive and adapt in any environment( city and backcountry). Other systems do exist, but the NDN community is very, very tight when it comes to traditional practices. And not all NDN people are involved in their peoples cultural/ traditional practices. Actually, most NDN people know next to nothing about their tribal history, or practices. The NDN community, usually, likes to do things the old way.... nice and slow. I hope this doesn't discourage anyone. Get involved in the community- go to Pow Wows, eat fry bread! If it's meant to happen it will. Until next time. Mabuhay Ang Eskrima!!! I don't know if he's overseeing the script writing, or what, but the writing has gotten steadily better. I do agree that the fight scenes have declined some, but I don't think it has anything to do (except coincidence) with Arsenio coming to the show. If you read the interviews on CBS.Com about the show, the director (I think it's the director anyway) says that the fight scenes have suffered (much as David pointed out in his post) from the rigorous production schedule of the show. They have one day to shoot their fight scenes, and that's not a lot of time. Mike > From: "David W. The first half or so of them give a glimpse of a few of Gat Puno Abon's wood carvings, and then the remaining show a few of the weapons in his collection. Included amongst the wood carvings are two that he did showing Harimaw Buno, and also there are two of his carvings that are combined in one scene to show two largo mano combatants. Also, the "Garimot" Arnis section has been added. Soon to come will be the Buno section. Sorry it's taking so long to make progress with the site, but between long hours at work, a family, a home, projects.... Well, enough with the excuses, I will try to get more material up there in the near future, and I'm hoping that I might even be able to add in some video clips. Please forgive any spelling or other errors; I will try to catch them and correct them as I can. Nothing is in completed form yet, really. Also, my thanks to James Kelly for taking care of the HTML coding/design. Not a great movie. Williams is supposed to be a mercenary whose brother is killed by a high school gang, and he poses as a substitute to find the killers. He does some martial arts, but he looks more like an actor acting like he can fight. I was pleasantly surprised though when, during one scene as he is explaining to his group of unruly high school students what a yo-yo is, he proceeds to use it to break a soda bottle held by a student - explaining that 200 hundred years ago in the Philippines, it was used as a weapon. Neat plug for Philippine weaponry.
