He was incredibly fast, tough as nails, and had an indomitable spirit. It was always interesting to see how quiet his contemporaries got when Angel expressed his opinion. How many 110 lb. guys out there can drop a 280 lb. professional wrestler with a thumb lock? Helio Gracie comes to mind; a "short" list ;) >Of course Rocky is 100% correct about Don King and gullible Americans. The >one thing he might have overlooked, however, is that even as Don King gets >rich so do the fighters. I thought one of the complaints on King is how he is able to put his fighters in debt to him, thus maintaining control over their futures. They make millions, but it's an axiom in pro sports, and especially boxing, that money is "easy come, easy go." In fact, run Heaven (or any other drill) slowly and concentrate on your form. Make sure that your lines of attack are clean (i.e.: in Heaven, the targets I use are the temples or collar bones of my partner). Work on getting the flow (which is not speed). Work on your proper body mechanics. By working on your lines, flow, and body mechanics, speed and power will come naturally ... and you'll be hitting your lines reliably. Usually, if you're just learning something (regardless of what it is) and you focus on speed first, then you'll end up moving very fast, but with little or no form. When talking about siniwalli, this means that you may be moving so fast that people can't see your sticks, but you're only hitting your actual target 1 in 100 times (this is, of course, a bit of an exaggeration, but hopefully you get the point). Speed can hide a lot of mistakes ... from you and others. If you're doing it fast, then you may think you're doing it wonderfully ... when in fact, you're not. Usually, though, a good instructor will be able to spot those mistakes regardless of how fast you go ... consequently, while speed may impress you, some of your classmates and friends, it's not going to do you a lot of good until you get the flow, body mechanics, and lines down. In the words of Dr. Gyi, we studied both the Ferrari and the Dump Truck styles. Professor Presas taught Modern Arnis basic stick defenses and obstruction removal to a mixed Arnis/Bando crowd. GM Presas remains as fluid and powerful as I have seen. I am spoiled in my ability to train with him frequently. This was only the fourth time I have trained under Dr. Gyi. I haven't met a more honest and open teacher. Saturday's seminar included medium (3 foot) stick techniques (mostly chokes and takedowns) from the Boar system, one of 9 animal subsystems available in Bando. Each animal system contains long (6 foot), medium and short (1foot) techniques for both stick and knife. In a semi-private session on Sunday, Dr. Gyi elaborated on the previous day's lessons, and answered questions on the development of several martial arts. Bando's stick techniques are fast, simple and effective, worth adding to your repertoire regardless of your current style. Both are tremendous teachers who have used their arts to survive like most of us never will. To echo a thought frequently expressed here, train with them while you can. Any bites? >Fry Bread Boy > The WEKAF Western Region in conjunction with Unified World Martial Arts Federation have scheduled several tournaments in the S.F. bay area. The UWMAF tournaments run a combination martial arts competition with an individual ring just for Filipino Martial arts. Since the Eskrima branch of UWMAF officers are also officers of WEKAF, we encourage the use of WEKAF style rules and gear in which we also supply, if the competitor does not have their own. Padded stick fighting is also welcomed but competitors must supply their own padded stick equipment. We found that replacement of broken padded sticks and supplying of foam head gear, can get very expensive. WEKAF gear can take alot more punishment and last longer, and rattan stick are cheap to replace. We would really like to see more participation from eskrima pratitioners especially the ladies. I have several ladies who would love to compete in the sparring, but hardly find any ladies to compete against. So they end up competing in sayaw only. The UWMAF tournaments are good tune ups, leading to the WEKAF regionals and the the Nationals which will field the US team in the WEKAF World Championships. This will be in Toronto Canada 2000. In the UWMAF tounaments, we also have a novice division for those practitioners who have less than two years experience or have never sparred in WEKAF style gear and would like to try, without competing against a veteran competitor. The following tournament will be coming up. L fight. Still turned out the same. Some additional thoughts: L. wore his foul protector up around his chest-- a very useful thing against a shorter opponent. H. did complain of a leg cramp in his corner after the first round. Just the thing for H. fans like myself to persuade ourselves to watch the rematch. In Las Vegas, all bets on either fighter winning were pocketed by the house, again proving that gambling is a voluntary tax on the mathematically impaired. And, after interviewing both fighters and all three judges, commentator Larry Merchant and Jim Lampley took the belts of all three major sanctioning organizations (WBA, WBC, and IBF) and literally threw them in a garbage can.
