I thought I would just keep them for my personal use or tape them up and give/sell them to my group. They are not really pretty enough for resale. That is why I was going to roll them with black tape. If you are in a pinch to get some sticks, I can let these go for $2.50 each, but I'd like to get rid of all of them together. Shipping included in that price. There are some good sticks in that pile that have been scratched up in the harvest process. If I had the equipment, I'd take the skin off and they would be pretty again. I think they would be great for just banging around. E-mail me on this if interested. - --- See you in the sticks, Dale ------------------------------ From: Date: Mon, 22 Mar 1999 11:15:06 EST Subject: eskrima: Weight Loss I'd suggest that you read all of the Zone Books, calculate your block ratio's, and percentage of bodyfat. Measure, measure, measure!! Keep a chart and record every two weeks. This precision help a great deal. I easily maintain 7% bodyfat. I use to strain to stay at 11% on the old carbo loading nonsense. My wife even stays easily at 10 to 12%. You can even call the Zone(Dr. Sears) at a 800 number. They are at www.eicotech.com. Weight control is control of insulin/glucogan, etc. Your workouts seem fine, Dont over train, you can fit only so much doggie-do into a bag so to speak. Feel free to email, I can usually find the answer if I dont have it. I'm sneaking this note out past my censor/wife who's been ++concerned lately about me putting any kind of med-advice out on the web ... so I'll open with a question (could be important for others as well): IF it's thyroid and the med suspects thyroid low, how's your iodine intake? That's a big IF hombre ... I was just looking over the signs/symptoms of low thyroid function (hypothyroidism) and man I'll bet you ain't goin' there. Early (slow-developing) symptoms "supposedly" :-) include fatigue, "lack of zest", and sensitivity to cold. Full symptoms: fatigue, lack of vigor (mental/physical), decreased appetite, dull/dry hair/skin, reluctant plumbing, insomnia, slurred speech, clumsiness and numbness and tingling in the hands & feet (paresthesia) ... can cause night blindness & deafness (OK, let's stop there). Can the med provide references to low thyroid function resulting from youthful athleticism? I confess ignorance here ... long time since I had endocrinology. On the herbal side of things tomodachi, how about some sea greens ... kelp, kombu, wakame, etc. for iodine. Seaweed soup bro'. However, what is really important is your body composition, i.e. what percentage body fat? Is your weight mainly muscle or fat? How old are you, BTW? >So finally I >went to see this specialist, of course were still waiting for the blood >work to come back ( seems like he took a gallon ), but without seeing >the test yet, he said he could almost bet its my thyroid. You hope! That would be nice and treatable. Unfortunately most people who put on weight do not have a thyroid problem. Do you have other symptoms of hypothyroidism, e.g. fatigue, cold intolerance, hair loss, skin changes (there are a few others)? >He said there isn't >much to do, they have some medicines which I didn't like the side >affects I was hearing. So I was wondering if any of you herbal Gurus out >there have heard anything. For the purpose of further discussion I shall assume that your problem is excess body fat (obesity). I apologize if this is not the case. This is a subject close to my heart. It is fair to point out that the treatment of obesity is now where the treatment of diabetes was before discovery of insulin. There are numerous theories why people put on weight and are unable to lose it in spite of appropriate dietary and exercise regime. There is to my knowledge NO (yes, I am shouting) effective "cure" for obesity. Diet and exercise remain the cornerstone of management, for some a lifelong regime is required just to avoid further weight gain let alone achieve weight loss. Common sense should tell you that an inventor of "obesity pill" is likely to become richer than a discoverer of cancer cure. The appetite suppressants do have side effects, some quite serious and in any case are not long term solutions. The dietary principles are well known: There are many good books out there on the subject. It may be worthwhile to invest in a visit to a reputable dietitian - it's amazing what denial can do and a good dietitian can help you see through it. In terms of fat-burning exercise, *moderate* intensity aerobic exercise is best, performed for an adequate period of time. If one exercises at too high a level one tends to burn sugar rather than fat. The same happens for the first 20 or so minutes of any aerobic exercise before one switches to fat metabolism. If you can find somebody to measure your lactate while you are exercising they can determine what is the right level of exercise for you rather than go by the usual heart rate monitoring only. After saying all that, my wife has lost 15 lb in a year on the same diet as me while I have put on 1lb. She does Tai Chi only, while I do a concoction of much more aerobically demanding exercise. Go figure...
