I was told that there was a thread concerning the events mentioned in the back of the book, The Way of the Warrior. Therein, after pejorative comments concerning the state of California martial artists in general, Gilbey gives a specific account of the confrontation between a Filipino martial artist (who I understand is Guro Dan) and a wrestler. Since I know all of the principles involved (except the wrestler who is deceased) and since I understand that there were eyewitnesses to the event who said it did not happen that way, I would appreciate any comments lurking out there. It has always seemed to me that there are epistemological problems with using the results of duels of any sort as validation of some system or fighter. I am sure that SOMEONE does win, but it is often rather like the film Rashamon, - -- 10 people witness an event, and there are 10 different descriptions of the results. Every system I have ever studied or run across has its pantheon of "unbeatables", those who took on all comers and were undefeated, but like Meg Ryan said in "When Harry Met Sally", "You do the math", SOMEONE had to lose to someone, sometime. Anyway, thank to any for their assistance. It's long and b= oring and takes alot of effort to establish the habit, but it is relatively sim= ple and feels really great when you see it working. First off, forget the special diets to kick start the wt loss unless the doctor says that you are at health risk currently and HE recommends it. THe simplests way to improve the healthfulness of your life is to read th= e recommended daily serving charts on the back of every food box out now an= d follow it. THe quality of your food sources is important but it is also = very important to pay attention to the proportion of calories used versus calo= ries taken in. If your eating 5000 calories of well balanced food and only usi= ng 2000, what do you think happens to the other 3000 unused calories...fat storage. = As far as exercise, a regular cardiovascular program is a big deal. Martial arts classes are not normally structured to sustain 60 percent to= 85 percent of your target heart rate for a reasonable period of time to get = a good cardio work out from it. It does work you and you will be stronger,= faster... but it is designed to gain a skill or challenge endurance, not improve cardiovascular health. On the weight lifting, are you lifting a = split body program or a whole body program? You should give the body at least = a day in between workouts for each muscle. Remember you grow during the REST no= t the work. Let your body recover and become stronger- three times a week per muscle is usually the recommended for non performance oriented fitness pe= ople (sports players, endurance athletes...). = This is from the fitness instructor/military physical fitness tester, hea= lth buff point of view. If anyone has any other good info let me know! I li= ke learning new things. The biggest thing for LONG TERM changes to health is more about changing habits from ones that are health dangers to health benefits. Quick fix w= ork outs and diets may get the results, but when you go back to the habits th= at put you in the state you want to change...your back there. Like I said before I am kinda built like a Tank Abbot, except maybe a couple in. shorter. As far as Mik's point about some other symptoms of low thyroid, actually I do have a few not everything you mentioned, but a few which is why the Dr. was concerned. I have had more colds in the last few years than I have in my life, and I constantly load up on herbs and vit. to keep my energy level up. I personally tend to believe that some of the weight gain was do to stress , being self employed, I had a few very stressfull years in the past. As far as Iodine goes I do take it in my daily supplements, I have heard that it is dangerous though!!! And any form of diet medicine is out of the question!! I hate taking cold medicine when I have to!!!!! Rocky P.S thanks for all the e-mail on fencing mask suppliers, now just one more question, why can't anything ever be located in MICHIGAN!!!! ------------------------------ From: "=?iso-8859-1?Q?Guro_Don_Mu=F1iz?=" Date: Tue, 23 Mar 1999 08:39:40 -0800 Subject: eskrima: Yahoo! I have a question that I am having serious problems with! Here's the scenario... I have a potential student who I have been electronically corresponding with for the past week or so who is very interested in studying the FMA. While speaking with him, he told me that he is currently enrolled in a Kenpo Karate school in addition to participating in Cardio Kickboxing. This I had no problem with...Then he dropped a doozie on me. He asked me about my waiver and then mentioned that he has Hepatitis C. After telling me that, he mentioned that his other instructor didn't mind as long as he was careful. Here's my laundry list of questions: 1.) What exactly is Hepatitis C? 2.) How does one contract such a virus? 3.) How contagious is it? 4.) Is it worth the risk to my students and myself to have someone with this virus in the school? 5.) What are the legal ramifications of my actions should I choose to not allow him to participate? Any chance of being hit with a discrimination case? 6.) Has anybody else out there ever had to deal with this type of situation? I'd love some feedback as this is a very sensitive issue! All the best! Jason M.
