This just shows that everone, even > the greats, are human and can be defeated. > Just a friendly comment here ... Guro I's (or anyone's for that matter) declining of a challenge is not necessarily related to his chances of suffering defeat. Looking at my own humble experience trekkin' the surface of this rock, I would never accept a challenge of any kind ... the mindset is "What the heck for?" Like, "What's the point? I got nuthin' to prove. Somebody gonna pay me a bunch'o'money or what???" I've told a couple of guys in the past that I did not want to fight, period. They thought I was a chump. Having said "I don't want to fight" a good thought provoking follow-up is something like "but if you attack me on the street I will simply do whatever I have to do." I would only fight if attacked, but then everything in the psyche and "game plan" can be set free to deal with the attacker :-) The "fight" motivation then comes from higher ground. The person who makes a challenge has something to prove. I respect Guro Inosanto for declining whatever the challenge he received. What's the point? So someone beats you or you beat them, what does it actually mean unless you're a prize fighter and it's over a prize? When I get in my car I take my clip-it out of my pocket and clip it to the shoulder harness that goes across my chest. That way it sits right under my ribs on my right side for easy access if ever needed. For what it's worth. Bill >> Yup, this is exactly what I did when a buddy and me were being followed one night. My buddy pulled his and held it. Since I was driving, I pulled mine and clipped it on the harness. I don't know how well it would have worked since I was able to lose the car that was following us when we hit the interstate traffic, but the blade was certainly a lot more accessible there while driving. Dan not accepting a challenge in no way shows he was defeated and in fact displays that what he is teaching is for self preservation not some ego test. Many fools can challenge but what would Dan gain by accepting such an offer? Why didn't the FMA practitioner challenge Dan a different way, by positively promoting the FMAs across the globe better than Dan? By being the bridge to many disciplines and martial cultures? That would be a tougher challenge but prove more worthwhile in the end. Nah, much easier to put forth a foolhardy challenge and then claim victory after non acceptance. <> First, the Gracie who lost was Royce and he lost to Wallid, a Carlson Gracie trained fighter. You dont fight this way, but they build sound body mechanics. Do any filipino styles practice exercises other than the male and female triangle?? I know there is other footwork, but do they draw patterns and do formal patterns?? Would a filipino stylist use a saw tooth like Top Dog, or like Pendekar de Thouars "sutut miring"??? Also does many other videos, knife, other weapons, guns, general hand to hand including ground fighting. He gives volume discounts. The system is designed around one's "natural response", minimum fancy stuff, but a lot of it seemed orchestrated and designed against attacks by no more than moderately skilled fighters. I liked some of his concepts e.g. minimizing footwork and some of his training methods. All in all I think the videos are well worth seeing on the principle of Mr. B. Lee: absorb what is useful. Here's the info on the wrap/tape that I previously mentioned. This stuff is GOOD!!! Self-Bonding Silicone Stretch Wrap for fast permanent weatherproof repairs - great non-slip tool grips too! Repair radiator and garden hose leaks, seal air ducts, seal extension cord connections, insulate terminal splices, whip rope-ends, re-grip tennis rackets, golf clubs, bicycle handlebars and tool handles. Silicone tape fuses to itself within minutes - forms a permanent bond in 24 hours. No adhesives required. Stretches up to 300% for a seal that resistes vibration, moisture penetration and shock. 1" wide rolls are 36' long and are available in rust orange and black. Specify color when ordering. Save when you buy in quantity. #6770 Silicone Stretch Wrap, #14.95, Modern Farm, 800-443-4934 My humble advice: Don't stretch it too much when applying it ... too much stretch makes for a weak wrap that will tear after a little use ... use slight tension when applying a half-covering wrap (i.e., in each winding of the tape around the stick). Also, don't let the wrapped ends of the sticks touch in the first 24 hours -- they'll stick to each other. Unlike the tool dip and other stuff there's no need to worry about fumes and mess, no cleanup, etc. Just wrap and use. I wrap the sticks, then put on weightlifting gloves and roll the wrapped ends back and forth (like trying to start a fire) for a few minutes. They're ready for use right away, gloves or no. Altho ready for use right away, they'll still stick to each other if you place them next to each other. Other than that, this stuff is one mell of a solution for anyone wanting to put a handle on their sticks. It's easy to build up a knob at the end of a stick by making a few extra windings around it and smoothing that over with a finishing wrap back up towards where the hand would be. This can help in practicing the sans-index finger grip we've discussed in the past, i.e., leaving the index finger out of the grip if/when relaxing the grip on recovering the stick after slashes (a la Indian club work, Japanese Sword, etc.) with the gripping emphasis shifting to the little finger. Have at it my friends. Agreed that there can be a lot denial in this regard, and there can be overreaction too. Regarding ringworm, with only minimal sarcasm intended ;-) bathing after a good sweaty roll can be a good idea. Abrasions in the skin happen in hard grappling and I have something antiseptic in my gym bag for such times. Also, there is this great product called "Liquid Skin" which comes in a bottle with an applicator brush. You brush the gooey liquid on, dance about and swear because it stings, and let it dry. Its an antiseptic, and works great on not only cuts but abrasions too, even when they are in a place that normally defeats Band-Aids such as elbows and knees.
