Ray Terry, PO Box 110841, Campbell, CA 95011 FMA@MartialArtsResource.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Date: Sat, 27 Mar 1999 00:02:50 EST Subject: eskrima: AAU Chinese Martial Arts/Stick fighting Dear Digest Members, I thought I would post a little snip about the up coming AAU Chinese Martial Arts (From here on out refered to as CMA) Nationals on May 22, 1999. To be held in Plano, TX. Just north of Dallas. They have started (with a little tug) an Island Arts division for empty hand and weapon forms, plus stick fighting. It will be solo baston competition this year with the possibility of Espada Y Daga next year if we have a turn out this year. Unfortunatly, because of insurance reasons, we will have to use a padded stick and head gear (opps forgot to mention cup). Anyone wanting a copy of the rules please e-mail me privately at GuroJohn@aol.com. One other thing worth mentioning...You must start the fight from your corner and not stick to stick. You must be able to fight Largo Mano or be able to close the gap. Should make things interesting. The AAU CMA people would like to have us FMA practitioners at their tournaments and are willing to give us our "own" divisions. What do you folks say? is it worth a try? Comments and concerns. John Bain Pambuan Martial Arts Family ------------------------------ From: Kalki Date: Fri, 26 Mar 1999 23:30:54 -0600 Subject: eskrima: TTDs: Training-Transmitted Diseases :-) > Regarding ringworm, with only minimal sarcasm intended > ;-) bathing after a good sweaty roll can be a good idea. Abrasions in the > skin happen in hard grappling and I have something antiseptic in my gym bag > for such times. Also, there is this great product called "Liquid Skin" > which comes in a bottle with an applicator brush. > Unfortunately, in the "real time" ways of things in this univers, nothing is gonna wait until one goes to bathe/shower to start its campaign against your health whether it be superficial or otherwise. Abrasions or no, fungi, bacteria and virusses begin their thing as soon as they contact you ... not "after a while" or later after the amoutn of time has passed within which you might have showered or bathed. They make their moves in the moment. Consider: Ever gotten athletes foot from the showers? The ONLY time that I have had athletes foot has been from using the shower of a martial arts school. The teacher/master once spoke to me with a shocked voice when he noticed that I was leaving the place ++quickly, i.e., before enough time had passed for me to hit the shower. I would just towel off and sky, shower at home. No more athlete's foot. The guys who were getting rignworm may have showered immediately after training ... that would not necessarily be enough to stop the success of the bugger that they picked up from the mats. If they had know to apply something to kill it right away, now that's another story. Hey, I don't even like to shake hands after noticing how some health professionals will sprint thru the john without washing their hands! (No jive). Liquid Skin is useful for some things but from my own humble experience I know that it can crack ... I wouldn't rely on it except to keep dirt out of something. When did it become an antiseptic? Even if it is antiseptic, that doesn't mean that it's antifungal or antiviral. OK, how do I relate this to sticks ... well, I don't let anyone use my sticks and I won't use anyone else's ... same for other training weapons, etc. Reminds me of what one Taoist kung fu man once told me when I asked to borrow his sword to demonstrate a form. To put it simply, he essentially said "No way." They have other reasoning about sword-loaning, but the concept generalizes to any personal implements that you could consider a "part" of you. Don't borrow, don't lend. Clean is good, eh? I can remember being looked at like I was some kind of sociopath because I wouldn't let a kid use my headgear one day ... the word was that I "didn't share" (musta been a bunch'o communists). My response was to put on my "GoTaHell" hat :-) BTW, if memory serves, Liquid Skin is not intended/recommended for anything but -very minor- cuts and abrasions, not for anything that leads towards an open wound. A Growl of Greeting to Some: I'm certainly not going to bother Guro I. asking him about this nonsense, but I really wonder about relating anonymous challenges from anonymous magazines on this Digest. If you're going to bring something up, then bring it up. I've been busy writing an article and various things for the members-only Dog Brothers Martial Arts Association webpage and have had enough sitting and typing for a while, but I suspect I may have more to say shortly. For the moment however a couple of points: 1) Did this even happen? 2) If it did happen, was it when he had a serious back injury for several years? 3) The man has traveled around the world for some 15-20 years and taught uncounted thousands of people at seminars, often with no one at his side except his wife. I know of the man being tested many times and physically making his point. He does not lack for courage. He just doesn't talk about it. 4) The point about age, weight etc made by several people is well taken. However, I do wish to point out that the man can (present tense) fight. As I have mentioned various times here on the Digest, I have been working on applied staff for a while. I am an active fighter, and have 16 years and 50 pounds on the man. When we've sparred, the man lights me up effortlessly. In BJJ he leg and foot locks me, and when he mixes in the Kali-- look out! Whoops! There went my throat, there went my collarbone bone and so forth. People have no f#$k^&g idea. 5) As many of you may know, he preaches fighting only when someone touches you. That's it for now. I'm going to walk the dog and go to bed.. Bill kuntaw@netpci.com ------------------------------ From: Date: Sat, 27 Mar 1999 09:03:52 EST Subject: eskrima: Inosanto Challenge Nonsense I covered this before. I just happened to be RIGHT there at the '87 Smokey Mountain Camp. It was the last day, Sunday...... Larry Hartsell walked up to Dan and Tim Tackett and introduced Tim Gahigan...and old time catch wrestler. He said that,..."this is the guy I told you about,....he is friends with Gene LeBell,...." This was in July. If you look at Larry's first video(a really good video by the way), you can see a man in his sixties standing in the shade watching. Larry filmed that video in May in Charlotte in about 100 degrees of heat. That man is Tim Gahigan. Tim took a partner and showed Dan that he preferred a near side grapevine/far side headlock,...etc. Tackett suggested that Mr. Gahigan teach the JKD portion of the seminar. I have the original notes to this day. Hartsell was there, Cliff Lenderman, Grace Cassillas, Chai, etc. You can even ask Cliff Stewart. He watched the whole thing. There was never a challenge. Gahigan was this nice, old, catch artist. I think he was a naturopath too. Tim Tackett asked him about use of B-vit's and herbs as Tackett puffed on his cigarette. Gahigan talked about using Almonds as a source of essential fatty acids(Zone Diet!!) Robert W Smith's book(Gilbey) is just like breaking boards and death touch. Nice reading, but dont take anything more seriously than Elvis dating aliens. A cool FMA( Inayan) footwork drill I was taught a couple of years ago, was built around Solomon's Seal( a.k.a., the Star of David). Draw, tape, chalk, or paint a "seal" on the ground with all the sinter-connecting lines included, then draw a circle around the "seal." The circle should touch all six points of the seal. Oh, yeah...
