You've opened a door to alot of people who might actually have a bone to pick with Mr. Inosanto. We all hear things from this person and that person, and we read alot of things from printed media. You've spoken with him and you've met with him, and like you said, you've looked at some of his material. Don't get me wrong, he might be a really humble man, who's given alot to others. I don't know because I've never met the man. I do have my own opinions about him, but they're not really worth fighting over. There are much more important things to do--such as teach the art, and take care of your family--than to open up conflict to defend someone else's honor. One thing I've learned is that the student precedes the Master in issues like this. Why hasn't any of his students stepped forth to defend his honor?? Maybe they have already. Or, maybe it wasn't worth it to Dan, or to his students. Who knows...and if it's past tense, who cares?? If you look for trouble, you might actually find it. As I have an interest in Military History I wonder if it would be possible to get the following info, Gurkha Regiment and campaign details. If the action happened as told there would be some clear documentation from military achives and at a guess a number of VC's (Victoria Crosses) awarded and I'd like to check it out. In World War II there were no fewer than 40 Gurkha Battalions, some 112,000 men. They fought British and Commonwealth troops in Syria, the Western Desert, Italy, and Greece, and Souht East Asia. To my knowledge ten VC's were awarded during WW2. At the time I reviewed recent ED's all I could see was postings about the "Inosanto Challange" and it appeared that someone out there was trying to hurt someone that I regarded highly. So this is why I answered the way I did. Would do so again if the offense was real. I like Guro Dan and have a lot of respect for him, what he does and how he does it. Guro Allen J. Breathing became difficult. We tried to clear the corpses from our defensive sector by dragging them down to a gorge some 100 yards away. There were several headless Japanese bodies. We found two heads covered with engorged leeches. Pieces of arms, fingers and intestines were swarmed over by thousands of insects. One Japanese had a kukri stuck in his helmeted head. We found another with a kukri lodged between his legs. We could not count the number of bodies we removed from the perimeter. , , , , It was a vision of hell. "Darkness came quickly , , , shells began exploding around us, wounding several men. Where were they coming from? Our night patrol soon spotted Japanese firing mortars from the gorge where we'd just piled the corpses. , , , (We were) ordered to silence them. We crawled down the slope into that unbearable stench. We plugged our noses with crushed leaves and mud and breathed through our mouths. I wondered how the Japanese could endure the stench of their own dead soldiers. We saw a Japanese Recon team of five men moving past us up the hill. , , , Men from the forward team flanked the enemy scouts and silenced them with kukris. We moved further down the slope and threw grenades into the ravine. The Japanese quickly withdrew. "Later that night , , , the determined enemy staged another attack. This time they tried to overrun our position with two companies. They screamed "Nippon Banzai!" the Gurkhas, instead of remaining in the trenches, jumped up and attacked the advancing Japanese with their kukris. We cut down many of them in hand-to-hand fighting. The surprised Japanese, who had not expected such an instant counterattack, fled into the jungle." I once saw him with a sai case, containing one sai and a rattan stick. I asked him what he would do if he had to fight with the sai, the classical techniques or Serrada. His response was "Serrada". Not sure how kama would be used in FMA format, though I'm sure it's been there at some time. Culturally, the East Asian island of Okinawa isn't that far from the Southeast Asian islands of the Philippines. About 10 years ago I got to sit in a video editing suite and watch Tadashi Yamashita edit his video on double kama. That man is intense, on and off film, and his kama are sharp! With no disrespect, if Mr. Sachetti was to reread the wisdom in Tuhon Bill McGrath's message "Challenges" in ED #127 and Author Unknown's message "Idiot Challenges" in Ed #128, he may want to retract his challenge. My assessment of Mr. Sachetti's message is that emotions were running high (who could blame him). Since he mentioned "Christ like" in describing Guro Inosanto and because of this Holy period now my question to Mr. Sachetti is WWJD? Or more appropriate, "What would Guro Dan Do?" If we praise a person why would we do something totally opposite to his teachings? Also for the record, no one on Eskrima Digest was challenging Guro Dan. Again this is not a flame, a challenge and I apologize if I sound like I'm preaching.
