What I reading led me to believe that someone was offending someone that I regarded highly and my reaction was sincere and approriate. As for DANGEROUS Bob I lived in the Philippines for 3 Years where I was attacked more than a few times and in China PRC for a year in 1989 when they were shooting the students. I cannot tell you how unpopular it was for me to stick up for the students. I do what I think is right, plain and simple and as for DANGEROUS, Talk is not dangerous, seeing the Knife comming at your face is dangerous and I will not shriek from it. My offer to accept the challange (which now is clear did not exist) was to stop the talk. If someone is mad enough to come at me with a Knife, Stick or Whatever I will deal with it without regrets. My soul is completely prepared but I don't know about theres. I will not be silent when I think something is wrong no matter what it is. If the action happened as told there would be some clear documentation from military archives and at a guess a number of VC's (Victoria Crosses) awarded and I'd like to check it out. "In World War II there were no fewer than 40 Gurkha Battalions, some 112,000 men. They fought British and Commonwealth troops in Syria, the Western Desert, Italy, and Greece, and South East Asia. To my knowledge ten VC's were awarded during WW2." In May 1942 he joined the 1/10 Gurkha Regiment. In June he was transferred to the 23rd Indian Division. His name at the time was Manahadur Rai. The quotes appear from issue 16 of "Command- Military History, Strategy, & Analysis". Other articles by him appear in issues 26 and 47. Command introduced the article saying "Dr Gyi's contribution to Command is based largely on entries he made in his wartime diary. His recollections provide a new perspective on a pivotal battle previously chronicled in English solely from a Anglo-American perspective. The photos, maps and OBs in the piece were also provided by Dr. Gyi." I would quibble with your assertion that "if it happened there would be some clear documentation from military archives." Maybe , maybe not. Likewise the implication that VCs are handed out whenever deserved-- I suspect in the fog of war not all heroics (especially those by small brown "heathens") are fairly noted by the paper handlers back at headquarters. I understand that war stories are often BS, but Dr. Gyi has had a long and highly respected military career of action of an unusual level. One of the natural doubts to those of us in our armchairs is why kukris and not guns. Today's excerpt may address that to your satisfaction, or then again, it may not: "During another patrol in the same area, we collided with an advancing Japanese Recon team on a narrow tiger trail that wound through the tall elephant grass along a sharp bend in the river. After a heavy rain the roar from the rapids could cover the sound of Dakota and Spitfire aircraft; neither the Japanese nor our men had heard or seen each other approach. " Suddenly we stood and stared at each other in disbelief-- only a few yards apart. Then the Japanese officer drew his samurai sword and charged screaming "Tsukkome! (Charge!) Banzai! Banzai!" We Gurkhas yelled back "Gorkhali ayo! (The Gurkhas are coming)" Swords, bayonets, and kukris clashed furiously. Yells, screams and groans from the combatants now drowned the roar of the rapids. After a few minutes of fierce fighting, the Japanese ran off, leaving 15 dead. We lost six, including a British NCO from the 1st Seaforth Highlanders , , , , It took us two days to return to base. I was hospitalized with malarial fever, two broken ribs, and a dislocated shoulder." From the perspective of the British soldiers who "documented for military archives" in that tropical jungle at that time and place, I would suspect that this small, brief engagement did not really get on the radar screen. I have seen Dr. Gyi's foot where a toe was torn off by torture by the North Koreans/Red Chinese in the Korean War. I have seen the matching scars, front and back, where a bayonet went in his back and came out where the chest comes towards the shoulder. I have seen the other foot, partially hamburgerized by a hand grenade. What proof have I that the causes of these wounds are what he says? Just his word. I take it. One day he taught Top Dog, Guro I. (who arranges to be in town whenever Dr. Gyi comes) and myself. When he demonstrates techniques on you, it feels like a man who has lived what he says. Now in his mid-70s, he currently teaches US Special Forces jungle survival and combat. Of this I have seen the fotos and letters. The man's record is long and extensive. Doubt if you wish. I don't. May 1, 1999 at 11:00AM at 4th St. and Ardmore in Hermosa Beach. The MAGIC WORDS: "No judges, no referees, no trophies. One rule only: Be Friends at the end of the day. This means our goal is that no one spends the night in the hospital and that everyone leaves with the IQ with which they came. No suing no one for no reason for nothing no how no way! Protect yourself at all times! Real Contact Stickfighting is Dangerous and only you are responsible for you. All copyright belongs to Dog Brothers Inc. And dear guest, please remember this means NO VIDEO CAMERAS!" As always, you may take photographs for personal, non-commercial use PROVIDED you give us a complete set of the ones you take. Our thanks to the few of you who actually did this. Please remember to do this folks! Also, please note that the "no suing no one for no reason etc." language applies to those of you in the audience too. If a stick or a fight comes flying your way- get out of the way! FIGHTERS MUST PRE-REGISTER, even if they have fought before. Please fill out this form or get in touch with us for info by calling (310) 543-7521. All calls will be returned "collect". Remember that you may fight with weapons other than a stick if you can find someone willing to go against you. The knife fighting done as a warm-up will again allow for 2 versus 2 matches again. Those of you who have been coming to the Gatherings for the last few years know how much things have changed in that time. And in the ten years since the Dog Brothers were born, the changes have been even greater. But for us there are some things which do not change ever. One of the values implied in the "No judges, no referees, no trophies" is one of neutrality in terms of styles and personalities—in other words, no bragging. This makes sense. We have fights in which we depend on the fighters themselves must pull shots that would put people in the hospital or reduce their IQ. In the maelstrom of a Real Contact Stickfight, this is an amazing thing. And this amazing thing will be harder to do if one thinks that to not put someone away might mean that later they would be barking. Over the years we have had many people of repute come to our Gatherings, secure in the knowledge that they could experiment, test, and hone, and win or lose without someone running off and writing it up in the martial arts media. In the Dog Brothers videos, fighters were simply described by their clothing color, never by their style or by their name. This is right. Overwhelmingly, people have understood this unspoken code intuitively, but recently someone has not and thus these words. PARKING. People often express surprise at the fact that we get to do what we do in a public place. It has been a very good trick and there is more to it than meets the eye. The Gatherings have gotten fairly large (36 fighters and 200-300 observers last fall) and so we need really ask everyone's cooperation on the subject of parking. Pretty please with a cherry on top! Therefore PLEASE park in the lots on Valley Drive, (which is one street west of Ardmore- cross the Greenbelt at 2nd or 8th Street) either at 4th street or 8th street or in the parking structure on the northeast corner of Ardmore and Pier Ave (approximately 12th street) and walk the ¼ mile along Ardmore to 4th street. Be aware that there is a driveway at the end of the gravel area on the street where the Gathering is held that can easily be blocked-- Please be sure that your parking does not obstruct any driveways. This is not just a matter some parking tickets. Local dynamics are such that this can lead to the prevention of future Gatherings at this location and finding another would be real hard. So please be considerate, arrive early, and park at the alternative locations and walk the last few blocks! SEE ATTACHED MAP. As always, you would be wise to arrive with an empty bladder. I enjoy it for a good forearm burn though I got to agree with Guru Besar Ingram ...it's an outdated weapon. Regards, Travis After many years of practice with the sai I will say that it must have *primarily* been used against empty handed attackers, and then the advantages are immense. If it could beat swords easily, the samurai would have changed over, wanting the success if not the longevity. The weight makes it very hard to control without 'holding it back' and the arnis sticks can flurry right over them. We spar sai against bo and stuff - they don't do so well but that could be because an effective hit from a sai is extremely damaging to what it hits, you just can't 'play' with them. But 3 sai, now there's a real treat...one to throw and then two to follow up. I punch a perfectly round hole in three quarter in. plywood at 23-25 feet with a sai. Closer than that and I'd use the combat throw from Webb and Janich (whom I like) and I don't care how it hits - the attacker is in a world of hurt. the fighting old man ------------------------------ From: Rocky Pasiwk Date: Fri, 02 Apr 1999 01:12:53 -0800 Subject: eskrima: Here we go boys and girls!! Ok BLW's and Danny Boys, loosen up you fingers and get ready to type!! Cause uncle Rocks about to piss you off. So what's new!!! I am already in the top 10 most hated people on the list, and this should put me right over the top and possibly right into my very own category. Well I always wanted to be number one at something. First of all I most give some credit where it is do. Guru Danny is fine martial artist and a very intelligent man, he has definitely helped to spread the arts that we all enjoy so much, his Bruce Lee ( " The greatest martial artist in motion picture history" ) connection gave him a tremendous edge, and his want for new knowledge and the window ( from Bruce ) allows him to exploit opportunities that most of us would never have. And for the most part I believe he is a fairly humble man. BUT lets not get carried away, ( Christ Like,) yea and I'm the Dalay Lama. Let old Uncle Rock tell you about one of his adventures with your god like philosopher who likes to talk in riddles. Many many moons ago, some 15 years ago I asked Remy Presas about a seminar Danny was giving in Michigan ( one of his first, or close to it ) Remy says, oh that's great you should get some friends and fellow students together and go support him, tell him I said high and good luck with his seminar. So off we go, when we get their I was about 18 and kind of excited to meet him, I hadn't seen him for a number of years since he visited my Wing Chun Do instructor in Monroe Michigan about 5 years prior, ( which by the way Sifu Clark lit him up good in Chi Sao (sp) ) So we get their he was kinda mingling before the seminar, I walked up to him introduced myself, told him I was one of Remy's guys, he just kinda smirked and said yea or something to the effect, then I told him Remy wished him luck, to which he more or less did the same, so I thought oh well maybe he's just busy. So the seminar starts and the first thing he does is start with single stick and he starts explaining different counters for various strikes, but first he starts in with, " there are some people that teach this tech, and that tech. and to hold the stick this way or block this way and that way, all of which will not work, and amazingly enough every thing he showed that he said wouldn't work was a Remy Presas tech. So know I am getting a little agitated, then he starts with his little stop watch thingy, show a tech. give them 2 minutes to work on it, and move on, thus over whelming them and baffling them, and instilling and even greater, illusion of your superiority upon them, to which many fall prey to. ( Are you warming your fingers up yet Doc ) Then we do a little single stick and I am working with one of his top students at the time ( You guys figure it out ) he knows I am Modern Arnis, but what he doesn't know is I am also a Modified Balintawak practitioner under Remy at the time and was also playing with some PT ( 1st mistake ) then he shows me a new drill which I had a little trouble with cause it was new I never did it before, but then he said something off color about my foot work and how I wouldn't be able to move or generate power, this come from guys who at that time trained with sticks so thin that I have had thicker bamboo chutes in my chop suey, ( mistake #2 ). Then we started to play just a little and all of a suddenly wham!!, he takes my sick away and fires a shot towards the head simulating a head shot, and says see you can't move the way you are standing, well I didn't know he was going to go from basically very slow and mild free flowing to a fast paced, hey I got you situation ( Mistake # 3 ). So then we started again, ( mistake #4 on his part ) cause this time I SSSSMMMOOOKED him like he wasn't even worth my time, we broke for lunch, I walked over to the guy who put the seminar on, told him to take his little group of wanna be Bruceeees and shove them up his ass!!!!! Oh yeah we did a few boxing drills but I learned from the Kronk Gym in Detroit, Need I say more!! So it seems that while your beloved Danny may not directly ever say any thing to someone he is not beyond poking at anyone indirectly, as with most of us. In fact I have heard it said many of times on the BL/DI digest, I mean Eskrima digest, that he will quite often say things like Boy I would sure hate to get hit by that tech. and what he really means is boy I would sure hate to be so ill trained that someone could actually hit me with such a tech. Hell why talk in riddles, say what you mean man. All Of the above is true I witnessed it and it happen directly to me so if you don't like it or don't believe me. BL*W me. Now the following ( man I am gonna get hammered I can feel it ) is he said they said stuff, but I figure since I wanna make #1 on that list I might as well go all out!!! ( You BLW's and DIW's don't carry guns do you?? ) back in 1973 or 4 Remy Presas gave one of the largest Arnis demos ever at Madison Square Garden in NY, and according to more than one Eskrima Master Danny was there, and he and Remy chatted and Remy urged him to us his BL connection, to publish a book on Fma, ( oh by the way I think he got Remy's autograph too ) any ways Danny did, and of course he mentioned every Filipino Master in the world just about except the biggest name of all Remy, lets see would you consider this a slap in the face????? Again this I was not there for, but hey why not ask Danny??? It seems to me that everyone has their little quirks here and there, and Danny not accepting a challenge was definitely the right thing to do, because all in all he has nothing to prove to most. But back then if he had a problem with Remy or really thought Remy couldn't fight then why play stupid little philosophical head games come out challenge him, ( I do believe it is the Filipino custom ) tell him what you think, clear your schedule for 3 or 4 weeks ( recovery time from the beating ) and do it man, supposedly that's what Bruce would have done!!. Now my personal belief on Danny is this a Hell of a martial artist, even though he does not like the term I recognize him as a master, and some what of a jack of all trades, but still master, and brilliant intellect. But a poor business man, hell the way his boys worship the ground he walks on, all I can say is your lucky I am not him. Cause I honestly believe that if I were him, I would have your houses, cars, all your money, practicing short stick tech. with all your wives and girlfriends, and one day I'd send you all off to that great space ship in the sky, you know the one behind the comet, where Bruce and Elvis are!! and I just know that many a followers would drink my magic potion, you know the one for enlightenment, so they could go practice their BJJ ( and I don't mean the ju jitsu style :-o!! ) with the God of martial arts Bruce Lee. So why don't we all just be sensible little martial artist and see things for what they are, to challenge a man like Danny for no reason at all is in poor taste, he deserves better, to worship him and believe in every little thing he does, and to believe he is without flaw, YOU DESERVE better. I wish Danny all the luck and good health possible, and may be some day he can tell me to my face why he did what he did way back when, ( not that he owe me anything) cause I know to that Remy is not completely without fault but then again no one one the list is saying he is!!! Man I can't wait to meet Bruce I'll bet he's sitting up their laughing his ass off!!! Ok guys let the wrath begin, I know my e-mail is going to get slammed, good thing I have a few days off, but right know I am gonna go see if my teflon jacket still fits, I have a feeling I may need it!! Anyone have a 1975 issue if official Karate!!!!! The man who tried to steal Modern Arnis, talk about things that make you go HHMMMM! but thats a different master and another story, besides pissing one group of dangerous people off a night is my limit, I don't wanna lower my chances of survival to much. Rocky Pasiwk ( a marked man ) P.S Just in case he is Christ like, I did take a really hard shot to the head today, so I know not what I type, so before I go to bed I will say a dozen Hail Bruce's and a dozen our father's. ok. ------------------------------ From: bernie reger Date: Thu, 1 Apr 1999 23:51:30 -0800 (PST) Subject: eskrima: Re: Moro Silat - ---->snip Guro Tanadjalan has over thirty years experience in the martial arts and has fought and studied in Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia and Singapore.
