ESPN2 has martial arts on Sunday afternoons. I was doing some paperwork and had on separate competitions, in succession, for Pro Judo, Kata (traditional and modern) and Sumo. I got hooked on Sumo a couple of years ago. The action is brief (usually; there was a former world champion from Mongolia who liked to lock up his opponents in a standing grapple and wait for them to tire. This guy was the smallest looking 300-pounder I've ever seen! Next to Americans at the same weight, he looked more like 200 ...); if you watch carefully, there's a lot going on. Anybody want >it? contact me off list - I've already got a copy, thanks. Strangely enough Steve Barnes, who co-wrote the Dream Park books, Kundalini Equation, and the Aubry Knight books (and was Kung Fu editor for BB for some time) is in my Silat class. So is Steve Perry who wrote the Matador series (a really good MA-dense bunch of books) and who helped with the new Tom Clancy book Net Force. Both are long-time dojo bums, and both have had a fair amount of FMA experience. It gets confusing. Steve Plinck and Steve Perry are in Steve Plinck's Silat group.... ------------------------------ From: Rocky Pasiwk Date: Mon, 05 Apr 1999 21:38:50 -0700 Subject: eskrima: Re- Sumo's Alain, As far as the Sumo goes , what I caught on the boob tube the other day, the guy from south Africa won , but he was only about 325 lbs, isn't this light for a sumo? I thought they went around 400 lbs to 500 lbs. And why do they squat low and lift their legs up from side to side before a match? Rocky P.s You guys from new york, I will be in west senica June 5th , get ready for some gopher throwing, if you haven't experienced it yet you'll love it!!! Also fire up the Wings man, my cholesterol is under 250, now we can't let this happen, suicidal wings at the Anchor Bar, last time Tim talked be into some cheesy place. If you can still feel your finger tips after the 3rd or 4th wing, then their just cheap imitations. ------------------------------ From: ed Date: Mon, 05 Apr 1999 21:04:58 +0000 Subject: eskrima: training stick preferences IMHO, there are only three major factors that need addressed when choosing a training stick: (1) choose a material that will not shatter or crack in half, (2) make sure your partner uses the same material, otherwise the individual with the stronger stick will destroy the other persons stick, and (3) choose a material that has some give to it, otherwise your wrist is going to absorb most of the shock. Brian Hutchinson ------------------------------ From: Date: Mon, 5 Apr 1999 22:09:25 EDT Subject: eskrima: Re: Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V6 #137 << There is a picture on page 28 of issue 26 of Command Magazine, in which the second installment of Dr. Gyi's writings appear, of the 3/9 Gurkha Regiment standing for inspection sometime in 1944 with drawn kukris. I too have heard about what you say about drawing the kukri, but perhaps there is a distinction between drawing it for a salute/for inspection and drawing it for action which could explain. Regardless, there is the matter of the picture. There they are with kukris drawn. >>MD Now that I look back at most books covering the kukris in some limited fashion, that I'm familiar with, it was not written by a Gurkha, therefore I can see where myth becomes fact. Someone else wrote that the kukris was used for everyday use, which makes perfect sense - the guys would also have to practice so there are many instances where a kukris would be drawn. Maybe there is more specific info on this subject? - --rafael-- ------------------------------ From: ed Date: Mon, 05 Apr 1999 21:17:56 +0000 Subject: eskrima: fma videos Looking through some old material I came across a 1993 Reflections catalog, a company that specialized in fma material. They sold several interesting videos: Kali Ilustrisimo Volumes 1-3 (starring GM Antonio "Tatang Ilustrisimo and filmed in Manila) Master Dagooc's Arnis Lessons Volume 1-2 (starring Master Rodel Dagooc of Modern Arnis and filmed in Manila) Lapunti (Arnis de Abanico) (starring GMs Johnny Chiuten and Ondo Caburnay and filmed in Cebu) Lightning Scientific Arnis (starring GM Benjamin Luna Lema and filmed in Manila) If anyone has any information on the company or has the videos please email me. She also informs me that I will be writing less for the Eskrima Digest for a week so that I may do some other writing for the Dog Brothers Martial Arts Association (DBMAA) webpage so that it may be opened to our members in the next few days before she leaves to go visit her mom. WARNING! ADVERTISEMENT FOLLOWS! A word if I may about the DBMAA webpage. This is going to be a very substantial effort and will (eventually) dwarf the DBIMA page. The DBIMA page will continue pretty much as before, although new technique sequences will be for the Ass'n website. Of course inevitably there will be a trade-off between my writing for the Ass'n page and this Digest. Not only will new technique sequences be for the Ass'n, but there will be a feature where after members have bought a vid-lesson questions about it can be asked and answered. There will be a section of stories of interest-- the excerpts from Dr. Gyi are an example of the sort of thing to expect. A transcription of an old article from Hawaii about Floro Villabraille is in the works. And more. There will be a section of writings and rants. Top Dog's recent postings here on the Digest will be collated and posted-- including some stories that were left out. There will be a section on the Curriculum of Dog Brothers Martial Arts. Already up is a piece on "The Seven Ranges of Stickfighting" and I'm nagging Salty to write one on Krabi Krabong. (He's also promised me to come to LA real soon so we can shoot the Krabi Krabong vid-lesson.) The idea is for members to have a reference for the overall structure and concept of the system. For those who have been unable to get your hands on various articles on the Dog Brothers that have appeared, there will be a section where you can find them-- although the foreign ones may not be translated! And there will be a place for rants on a variety of subjects and excerpts from articles of interest (e.g. legal liability issues, certain aspects of political matters, etc) There will be a way for members to find and connect with each other, and much more. FWIW; Yes , I include guns in my training. I consider it a part of a complete martial arts system. I am a firearms instructor with the US Border Patrol and I try to convey this message to all of my students. During both offense and defense, FMA principles should be considered (i.e.. distance, getting off-line, and triangulation). At close range it is a matter of life and death. The Teuller drill should convince you of that. Circles are used but tangents to the circle are not. To be perfectly honest, I didn't completely follow Tuhon Bill's explanation on "The hit and not be hit". He lost me at the 90 degree tangent (89 0r 91 degrees doesn't work?) :') The best I could figure... the path of both fighter's sticks follow the path of an eclipse. The greatest reach is at the "end" of the eclipse. You move off to the left or right of the end of his eclipse, and are beyond the range of his eclipse, and yet are still in range to hit him ("in the window")..... you are able to work "The hit and not be hit". (Right? Does this make any sense...hard to describe.) Al, could we maybe convince you to come forward and explain the mechanics used in Garimot Arnis. Could we..huh could we?? It's no myth but it could be a practice that does not have the same meaning as it did. "Legend had it that Gurkhas never drew their service-issued kukri (curved Nepalese knives) without drawing blood, even if it were their own. Although probably a tradition of a bygone era, the legend added immeasurably to the Gurkhas' reputation for toughness." Origins of the legendary Gurkha by US Army/Library of Congress. See http://lcweb2.loc.gov/frd/cs/nptoc.html#np0129 There are plenty of oral histories about inquisitive soldiers asking Gurkha's to see their Kukri and before replacing it into its scabbard cutting themselves. As to a Gurkha considering the Kukri as simply a tool. No soldier ever thinks of a weapon as simply a tool, not when you consider its purpose. >The officer in charge may have great respect for his allies as General >MacArthur did for the Filipinos during WW2- However, that is not usually >shared by those in another culture who never saw them in the trenches and >probably never met or cared to meet the "little brown brothers". "brother", "devils" or "heathen" Agreed, but Bill Slim was different, he spent 20 years with them and could speak their language. Clearly he held them in very high regard. http://www.cbiinfo.com/billslim.htm >Wittiness aside, if I read correctly, this still leaves open the question >of what was the case during the war. To my knowledge the 10th was established in 1890 and was known as 10th Princess Mary's Own Gurkha Rifles and it's name did not change (or it's colours) until the 2,6,7 and 10 GRs became the Royal Gurkha Rifles in 1994. It was definetly not known as the 10th Burma Gurkha Regiment. The Burma Regiment raised from non-Burmese survivors of the retreat from Burma contained a number of battalions of Gurkha's 2nd, 4th and Chins Hill Battalions.
