I learned the seven forms, also referred to as pangamuts, and still practise it daily. I wondered if anyone knew anything about this art as my own knowledge of its history, origins etc. are very sketchy and I'm intrigued. Thanks to anyone who deigns to help me out, Dom ------------------------------ From: "Eric Van Skike" Date: Thu, 15 Apr 1999 10:14:11 PDT Subject: eskrima: I.T. (One reason to bring a partner with you.) The last seminar I was at, the hot shot I was working with insisted on hitting my check hand. Apparently he trained to prove how quickly and closely he could come to the chest. I train to keep my check hand up. If my check hand was up, he was going to hit. He said this and was true to his word. After being hit a couple of times I complied. I still haven't figured out why, if he had such skill and control, he simply couldn't amaze me with how close he could come to my hand- without hitting it. One thing that all instructors of any style of escrima should be able to do is "play" with another instructor. What I mean by "play" is a type of controlled free style sparring where you give and take techniques. Of course the major problem is that you need to leave your 'ego at home' It's interesting that many people that call themselves instructors don't seem to be able to "play"" I know I may get flamed on this but I went to my 1st Filipino Arnis tournament in 1980 (maybe early 1981). It was held at the United Nations. I remember Tom Bisio and Akmed (sp.?) fighting each other and I think Tom won. Back then Akmed was one of the most impressive Arnis practitioners I had ever seen. Anyway getting back to the subject, Tuhon Gaje "played" with Guro Inosanto at the end of the event. The sparring was most impressive and in my analysis, Tuhon Gaje was the better of the two that day. I have enjoyed the other's posts and welcome the day he will be allowed to post again. I think the best for all of us to do now is to be respectful of the owner and let time run it's course. Is this a difference between the Art and the practical application? Is this something one only appreciates as one reaches the very top of the art?" The answer to the first question is quite simple - the more counters you know, the better the chance of success. Also, the more counters you know, the better the chance of you being able to counter a counter. In the Garimot system and in most other systems there is no difference between the Art and practical application. Basically this distinction is dependant upon the one teaching you. In other words is your teacher showing you a technique that will be practical and effective or is he or she showing you a move to look fancy? Yes, this might be something one only appreciates as one reaches the very top of their art or one might be lucky enough to have an instructor who fully explains what is being shown regardless of your experience. I have enough seminar footage to make a weeklong miniseries, but I would love to see that demo! (not to bust on any of the old people on the list, but it was before my time!) ;-) Kevin Black shillelagh2@hotmail.com _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web.
