We live in a generally casual society. I call my boss, a VP, by his first name. I call the CEO of my company by his first name. The people who work for me address me by my first name. I call my customers by their first names. What's the big deal about calling a teacher of our HOBBY by his first name? Yes, MA is more than a hobby, it's a lifestyle, blah, blah. Seriously though, I think some of us are a little overly defensive here. Ed === _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? You can find them at farm stores or horse shows. (There is a chain of stores in the Midwest called 'Farm and Fleet' that sells octagonal oak stock canes for $6. I have 3.) Good luck. They say "Call a spade a spade." Who they are, I don't know. You have to admit, Dan Inosanto goes by Dan, Bill MacGrath goes by Bill. etc etc ad infinitum. If someone calls me "Neily" I see it as someone who cares little about my feelings. Before this gets any bigger. Let's talk FMA. We can start another board for spawning blood feuds. Ray, you have a great thing going, I don't want to spoil it. So, I 'm out of the fight. Neil PS: I will take a free plane ticket, though (no challenge, just like to travel) ------------------------------ From: Date: Mon, 19 Apr 1999 21:15:21 -0700 (PDT) Subject: eskrima: over Seems like all sides have now had their say. Time again to move on. No more. Ray Terry raymail@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com ------------------------------ From: "Weymouth, Rob (Worley - Perth)" Date: Tue, 20 Apr 1999 12:19:16 +0800 Subject: eskrima: Sai follow up inter alia Thanks to everyone who responded regarding the topic of facing sai. A recurring theme I found suggested was to think of the situation in generic terms of a longer weapon versus a shorter weapon. Would people like to share some thoughts on the generic situation of the combat between two mis-sized weapons? From the short weapon perspective. From the long weapon perspective. Hmmmmmm...Is unarmed against a weapon in some ways just an extension of this situation since, most weapons increase the holders reach (if only by inches)? I believe this mismatch topic was discussed a score of months ago, but I can recall little of the outcomes. Oh, and maybe we had best stick to a single weapon per fighter (ie. not [whip and daga] vs [rattan]). In the end I guess that the strategy is like the one appropriate for the current thread on knife fighting - to beat (maybe 'kill' is a better word here) someone in a knife fight is simple - cut them and don't get cut yourself. Simple. Not Easy. But simple in the sense that all you have to do to win an NBL game is to put the ball in the hoop more times than the other team. Thanks, Rob Weymouth P.S. - oh and regarding MA fight scenes? I'd like to mention the fight in the superstructure above the Ariecebo Radio Dish at the end of 'Goldeneye'. Not because I remember the technical aspects of the fight, but because I really got a feel that both combatants were focussed on getting a gun. To a large extent the hitting and kicking by the protagonists seemed to be an expedient to perforate the other guy. Often characters in many movies ignore or throw away weapons to engage in the manly art of fisticuffs, leaving you wondering why. ------------------------------ From: Date: Tue, 20 Apr 1999 00:20:43 EDT Subject: eskrima: Re: Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V6 #164 In a message dated 99-04-19 20:10:21 EDT, you write: << BABUM NIM >> Hey Rocky, As a Hapkido instructor, just thought I'd say it is Sabomnim.
