I don't recall if this was posted on this list but here goes: <<< Subject: Fundraiser raffle for Grandmaster Lanada Hi folks, As one of those karate people who also partakes of some arnis training, I thought I might pass this along for anyone who might be interested. Great-Grandmaster Porfierio S. Lanada, the founder of the Arnis Lanada system, has recently encountered some hard times. He is still living in the Philippines, where he not long ago suffered two strokes which have left him unable to work for the time being. In the meantime, the costs of his recovery are mounting, leaving him in a financially difficult position. To help Great-Grandmaster Lanada during his recovery, the Northeast Karate Association (headquartered in Waltham, MA) is holding a raffle to raise money for him. The Association has donated three prizes for this raffle. The prizes are as follows: First Prize - Century Sport Stretch stretching machine Second Prize - The Wave free-standing heavy bag Third Prize - Century Force Shield striking shield with force meter The raffle tickets cost $5/ticket. Please contact Northeast Karate Association president, Master Robert Moran, for further information. Did someone shoot the messenger? pat ------------------------------ From: Patrick Davies Date: Tue, 27 Apr 1999 14:22:26 +0100 Subject: eskrima: Preferred styles There also has to be the recognition of your genetic make up. A stocky build like myself may not be best suited to certain styles or may find that techniques are best suited by applying the concepts of another art to make them work. For example, my trapping is generally from Jun Fan but the way I apply it is more FMA. This suits me more with my build and lack of speed & dexterity of some more lithe practitioners. Having had to use it in an environment where the potential of weaponry was greater than the daily average the slant of the FMA relating to zoning with regards to the other hand was more attractive. JKD is not an assortment of arts. While we can identify arts that have combative attributes which we feel can add to our base, just training in them and having lots of pieces of a jigsaw doesn't mean that you get the picture. Its not eclectic but a synergy as you so rightly say. From: "Grantham, Stephen" > - - ---- My preferred combination is Kali/Eskrima for weapons, Muay Thai for kicking/boxing range, Wing Chun for close range, and Shooto/BJJ for both standup and ground grappling. Personally, I think all these arts kind of overlap each other in many ways anyway, so together I think they make a pretty synergistic whole. Of course, I do train Jun Fan/JKD so that may influence my thinking! snip pat aberdeen martial arts group ------------------------------ From: Date: Tue, 27 Apr 1999 07:38:03 -0700 (PDT) Subject: Re: eskrima: digest no. 176 > Seems this one never came to my mail box. > Did someone shoot the messenger? > pat Bang... :) It probably got lost in the ether.
