Don't concentrate on the finger or you will lose all the heavenly glory". "Do you understand"? Guru Harrell >> From Animal But don't forget the mountain in Africa, which in the local dialect means "that's your finger." So named when the explorer pointed and asked "what's that called?" He dutifully wrote down the response. Many people take what they understand from a teaching then only pass that on. Then they start quibbling over who has the "right interpretation." ------------------------------ From: Date: Sun, 02 May 1999 20:26:31 -0400 Subject: eskrima: Joint cracking, neck and otherwise Hi all; Guess it's time for me to stop lurking and earn my pay. All joints in the body have a joint capusle, and the cracking sound heard is when the joint surfaces are slightly seperated. This causes a negative pressure in the joint space and gas, we think nitrogen, rushes in like soda when you open the bottle. This is demonstratable on x-ray for about twenty minutes post "crack". If the cracking occurs due to the person moving through a normal range of motion, no damage to the joint or disk will occur. However, If you force or "help" the joint along to make the crack occur you risk stretching ligaments, which will cause increased range of motion (pathological) and lead to early degeneration. Hyperextending the neck can impinge on the major blood vessels leading to the brain, causing the tingling or dizzines. If this occurs you should seek advice as this normally dosen't occur without a pre-existing compromise of these blood vessels. Frequent joint cracking should also be evaluated as the joints that are cracking are hypermoble and secondary to other joints not moving properly. If you're still awake after all that, I hope it helped. The demo would include GM Cacoy Canete, Alfredo Bandalan Sr. and Jr. , GM Wally Jay, Berkeley TKD instructor Secrease , Leo Fernandez, Roger Thomas, Reginald Burford and others. Kimball Joyce was in attendance. (He was still going by Kimball then and may be identified as such on the video, so no hate mail please.) I presume other local Martial Artist where in attendance also. (Tommy the Whip, were you there?) Eskrima, Small Circle JJ, TKD, and Japanese swordsmanship were the demos. If anyone has a copy of this demo or knows where I can get one, please let me know. The only copy that I know of was borrowed by a Berkeley Eskrima Club member and never returned many, many years ago. TIA. I was told by an ortho surgeon that it can cause degeneration of the disc. A q on the conditioning thread: Have there been studies on the long-term effects of MT shin conditioning or the knee conditioning techs mentioned previously? tenrec tenrec@avcorner.com ------------------------------ From: "Todd D. Take a look at www.mwarrior.com and go to the police articles section. There are (or were - things get changed from time to time) a couple of articles on teaching palm strikes as opposed to regular punches. By the bye, anyone in the NYC/Long Island area would be well advised to check out Modern Warrior. They aren't FMA or IMA or Thai MA, or JKD; I am as impressed by Phil Messina and his students as I have been by any teacher or school I have seen. That includes Sid Woodcock, Dan Inosanto, and the de Thouars brothers. The afore-mentioned Mr. Messina has an unchristly amount of real-world experience (NYPD's most decorated cop, most violent felony arrests, several years as an unarmed violent crime decoy, etc. etc. etc.), a lot of training in several martial arts, and a program which is always innovating in response to the needs and situations of his students, many of whom are cops. Since he spends most of his time on the cop defensive tactics circuit rather than the martial arts seminar one most of you will probably not have met him. Tiel and I were exposed to the school through the American Women's Self Defense Association which was founded by his wife, Liz Kennedy. Anyhow, they teach open hand strikes instead of with the closed fist for a number of reasons. First, to save wear and tear on the hands (cf. Boxer's Fracture). Second, because of the specific needs of police officers (fewer accidentally discharged weapons for instance). And because in the experience of the teacher and the students these strikes work perfectly well in violent encounters. >Today I wish I practiced them more. I >see the sense to discourage anybody who uses their hands for living from >punching with their fists (I am told that special forces train the same way >- - if you bust your knuckles you cannot fire your weapon!).
