For you to have developed a bursitis you would have to have had some bad biomechanics for some time. I would agree that further stressing the knee before fixing the biomechanics would likely only make matters worse. It's not that your knee is too weak, it's that something is not moving correctly. If the front wheel bearings on my car are wearing out because of a bent frame, hauling a trailer up into the mountains is not going to stop the squeaking. I would first find out what was wrong with your knee and fix that. Good luck with the knee Stephan Howard-Cooper, DC ------------------------------ From: "brian and kathy" Date: Thu, 6 May 1999 22:36:59 +0100 Subject: eskrima: med I've had more than my fair share of joint injuries my advice is rest the joint for a fortnight when its very bad. Treat with alternate separate applications of ice packs and infra red heat lamps. A hot bath before and after training is good. Alternate separate heat and ice, type sprays ,support bandage, gentle exercise avoiding movements that hurt. I had cortisone jabs in one elbow that made it worse though. I hope this helps. But the bursa are a closed, round, flattened sacs of dense fiber lined inside by synovium that make a fluid, they reduce friction between the joints (Bone to bone), joints and skin, etc. Do you have fluid or swelling around the lower part of the knee? If so did they aspirate the knee to check for infection? Bursitis is caused by infection, overuse, direct impact, and a host of other medical conditions such as gout. Proper stretching and warm up, and wearing knee wraps to keep the joint warm will help. Ice to the knee afterwards can reduce the pain and swelling. Most importantly take it easy. Bursitis can take awhile to go away or may never go away completely. Did the doctor give you any anti-inflammatory drugs? They can help reduce the pain and swelling also. I would not do anything that causes you pain, this is just causing further irritation. Work on some other aspect of your training like trapping or other skills. I don't know your situation but I hope the doctor said that it would get better. In the mean time try to avoid kneeling or bending your knees for long periods of time (Certain "stances"), etc. You might also try acupuncture for the pain. The acupuncturist I go to sees a lot of ballet dancers and repetitive motion injuries. She really helped me deal with my chronic back pain after an auto accident. Good luck.
