I noticed it when I skimmed through the magazine but I needed to get the letter done before I move on to read any of the articles. Personally, I really enjoy reading the FMAM. The articles have been very interesting and they fit right into our interest in the FMAs. The subsription cost is very reasonable - $18.00 for 6 issues. I would suggest that our fellow ED list members contact Mr. Eliot Shearer via e-mail for more information about the magazine. I will comment on your article on Monday. Sincerely, Dr. Jerome Barber > ------------------------------ > Date: Thu, 6 May 1999 22:49:42 EDT > Subject: Bibliography of FMA > > For those of us that subscribe to Filipino Martial Arts magazine, I > recently had a short article published on the contemporary state of > published works on FMA. Agreed. Mr. Shearer, a member of this list, does publish a good FMA magazine. I look forward to each issue. Ray Terry raymail@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com ------------------------------ From: "Kevin Davis" Date: Fri, 7 May 1999 14:16:32 -0700 Subject: [none] Sorry that some of this info is a little late but... Ref: Gurkhas Several years ago I purchased a tape series from the Discovery Channel on the world's special forces. Having recently had time to review the tape I submit the following: Throughout the year retired Gurkhas called galawallas (sp?) scout and screen the hills for young men for tests called "hill selection." Some of the young men train for nearly one year to pass the tests. The tests are once a year and are by invitation only. The recruits must be at least 17 years old; 5'3" tall. They must do at least 12 pull-ups; 35 sit-ups on a 45 degree incline in two minutes. They then go to the British camp for further tests. The final test is a 4 mile endurance test with 70 lbs.of rocks in a basket on their back up a mountain that rises 4,000 feet. After their basic training (which is two times longer than other British soldiers to accomodate an English language course) they sign up for stints of 15 yrs. They make approximately $300.00 a month the most of which is sent home to their families. A dress inspection of their khukuris was performed on the tape. Upon the command "Khukuris draw!" Teh Gurkhas laid their rifles on the ground in front of their feet and drew their blades. The khukuris were then presented with the left hand blade forward, tip up for inspection. The scabbard was worn at the rear of the belt with the handle to the left. Since the Gurkhas were wearing dress whites, the myth about drawing blood when they unsheath the khukuris would be messy. Ref: Knife targets on the human body Just to add a historical prospective to this issue, I submit the following: W.E. Fairbairn in his book, "Get Tough! How to Win in Hand to Hand Combat (1942) identified six targets consisting of four arteries (Brachial, Radial, Carotid and Subclavian)as well as the heart and the stomach. It was his contention that knife attacks against these targets would result in death or quick incapacitation due to loss of blood volume. Fairbairn continued his research and developed the "Timetable of Death": Target Depth Below Surface Time to Unconciousness Time to Death Brachial 1/2 inch 14 seconds 90 seconds Radial 1/4 inch 30 seconds 2 minutes Carotid 1 1/2 inches 5 seconds 12 seconds Subclavian 2 1/2 inches 2 seconds 3 1/2 seconds Heart 3 1/2 inches instantaneous 3 seconds Stomach 5 inches instantaneous 3 seconds *I don't submit this as gospel. I am just relaying the info to members of the Digest. In addition there is no info that I am aware of as to the source of Fairbairn's medical data. The depth of these targets is interesting in that in a self defense situation the defender must always remember that "any" knife or edged weapon, regardless of blade length, presents a deadly threat.
