I am interested in any material relative to the training used by the troops with the single edge blade, large pommel, etc. Thanks,...Tom Furman...tcsno@aol.com Tom Read "Cold Steel by John Styers. He took the methods of Col James Bowie and A. J. Drexel Biddle who was the dean of USMC Unarmed Combat School during WWII. He also taught marines and other service members the use of the k bar knife and other similar shaped knives i.e. USAF Survival Knife etc... He also teaches Bayonet, stick and unarmed combat in this book. His style is a long range style of knife fighting. The book is available from Paladin press. Remember that the k bar is shaped like the traditional Bowie Knife as per my last posts on types of fighting knives. Any questions, pass me an email. It was, and probably still is, a book that the Marine Corps used as a knife fighting manual. By the way, the USMC Fighting/Utility #1217 is still being made to the original specs by KA-BAR. ___________________ Kelvin Williams kel620@aol.com Modern Arnis Student ------------------------------ From: "Rudolf Kimbel (100432.650@compuserve.com)" <100432.650@compuserve.com> Date: Sun, 9 May 1999 21:19:41 -0400 Subject: Re: eskrima: Gettin the chatter go'in to:INTERNET:eskrima@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com >> The Living Room is FMA, the entertainment room is Silat, >> the garage is like Dog Brothers FMA, the basement is Boxing, >> the bathroom, around the toilet, is TKD... >That should get us going again... A few weeks ago, a guy with a knife tried to rob a video rental. The cashier was a young girl doing TKD. She kicked the knife out of his hand, punched him in the face. He fled the scene. Lot's of press and smiling cops. Ok, I'd never try it that way, I'd never do TKD, I'll stick to my eskrima. BUT SHE PULLED IT OFF WITH TKD. Prof. Kufferath was born in 1911 in Honolulu. 'Sig', as he was known to most, was recognized as a 10th Dan in several arts & organizations, including his primary art of Danzan-Ryu JuJutsu. One of those that was a friend to all. He will be missed... Ray Terry raymail@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com ------------------------------ From: Date: Mon, 10 May 1999 08:37:18 EDT Subject: eskrima: Reflections on a Gathering After attending the recent "Gathering of the Pack", my first one in 2 1/2 years, I came home with a few bruises, a broken knuckle and some new insights into combat. One of the things that really stood out in my mind was the 2 man knife sparring and the awareness people need to keep from getting stabbed in the back. There was a tremendous amount of noise and people around and in a highly adrenalized state it was extremely difficult to keep track of the second person. I was never aware of the second opponent until he had already stabbed me in the back. A great lesson and something I need to work on. The fighting was intense and the quality of the fighters improved since my last visit. One noteworthy thing was the use of the stick as a thrusting weapon on the ground. One fighter repeatedly thrust his stick into the ground by his opponents head, during a grapple, had the thrusts been centered he would have done serious damage and ended the fight. It was also evident, from the bruises and contusions, that many of the fighters have developed great power in their stick work, without sacrificing speed and accuracy. The best part of the gathering was the spirit of the fighters. There was, to my knowledge, no hard feelings or animosity. Only a spirit of camaraderie, which is extremely refreshing, instead of hearing all the complaining and macho bs that martial artists are capable of generating. This may be because of the reality of the fighting, there is no ambiguity in a Dog Brothers stick fight, you feel like you have been in a real fight.
