Last week I finally got to meet Massaad Ayoob nose to nose. (for those of you who don't know who he is, he's kind of the Bruce Lee of the shooting world. His theories rocked the traditional gun combat views). Mind you that we have spoken over the phone several times and sent each other books, but it had always been that he was in NH while I was in CA, I was in OR while is was in CA, I was in CO while he was in AZ and so on. He is writing the foreward for my new book on police use of force. So it was both exciting for me to finally meet the guy. Anyway he invited me to attend his seminar "judicious use of lethat force." Folks, save your pestolies and go. If you have ever had a question about what a screaming hassel it is to use a weapon on someone in self-defense, when, where, why and how you can and can't use it and the horrible psychological impact it can have on you, this will open your eyes. The man has seen the elephant and he tells you about it straight out. Furthermore mi amigos, one of the main thing he dwells on is the justification of shooting someone with a knife. The drill that proved 21 feet against a knifer is a reasonable distance to shoot the sucker was done by Dennis Tuller. It will make you rethink your position on drawing your knife, next time you are nervous. And well it should. Anyway I cannot speak highly enough of this course. The man is an expert witness and has helped defend many people who were faced with legal problems after defending themselves. On the web it's ayoob.com. If there is the slightest chance that you might end up using a weapon to defend yourself GO! ------------------------------ From: Date: Mon, 10 May 1999 13:59:43 EDT Subject: eskrima: Myths Re." ED 195 "He took the methods of Col James Bowie and A. J. Drexel Biddle who was the dean of USMC Unarmed Combat School during WWII." Old myths, like old habits, die hard. Bowie never had a method of knife fighting, as he never was knife fighter. That legend was born out of America's need for another model of the 19th century "rugged individualist," along the lines of Dan'l Boone (100 years earlier.) The legend is just as credible as the one concerning Davy Crockett, who "killed him a bear when he was only three." Run a search on James Bowie and you'll turn up tidbits like: "James ("Jim") Bowie (1795-1836) participated in one documented knife fight in his life, near Natchez, Mississippi, in 1827. He was a second at a duel that got out of hand and he was shot in the leg, stabbed with a sword cane and clubbed in the head. While struggling to get up off the ground he accidentally disemboweled an antagonist. The fight was widely broadcast by the press and Bowie became an instant celebrity. Cashing in on the publicity, Jim's brother, Rezin P. Bowie (1793-1841), began having knives made as gifts to influential men." ...or "At the outbreak of the Texas Revolution, Bowie never received a commission from the Texas government for his little bit of army work. Instead, he was elected colonel of a Texas Ranger company." Whatever he was, besides a documented land swindler and slave owner, Bowie was no knife fighter. Of course, none of this takes away from the fact that Styers' Cold Steel is a good source for Ka-Bar tactics. A few questions 1) what the best way to mend a rip? (duct tape?) 2) If the bag has become bottom heavy should I refill it? 3) how far off the ground should it be? Thanks Gar ------------------------------ From: "Jason Inay" Date: Mon, 10 May 1999 12:16:00 PDT Subject: eskrima: Re: Sig Kufferath, and TKD vs. Knife I have had the privelage of attneding seminars and classes conducted by Professor Kufferath. It was amazing to watch A gentleman of his years be able to throw around his students. He was truly a gentle soul and I for one will miss him..... In regards to the TKDist vs. the Knife. Alright!!!!! Timing is everything. Every Art is viable within it's own environment. _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. Hi to all the list members in the U.K. Most of you will have heard on the FMA grapevine that Crafty Dog is coming over to the England at the end of the month. I understand he will be covering the seven ranges of stick fighting. From personal experience I know that having just a few hours of tuition from Guro Marc, can make a big improvement in your ability and understanding of the martial arts. A whole weekend should put you why ahead of the game. I understand that places are going fast as word spreads, so if you would like to go please contact Krishna Godania, 01926 490394, (Mobile) 0402 554662 or kgodhania@aol.com The seminar will be on the 29/30 May at Newman College, Birimingham. Most people will know Crafty Dog as an excellent fighter, he is also a great teacher with a good sense of humour. Which is just as well when he tries to teach students like me staff techniques (remember Crafty???). I hope to see you there. Richard Killick. P.S. Hi! I noticed your location and couldn't help saying Hi to a fellow Maritimer! I had been training in NB and can empathize with your predicament in finding qualified Instructors in Eastern canada.. Ther are a number of On-Line places to try and Videos to order but the reality is you will need to be guided by an instructor regularly.. But there is good news.. *smile* There are a number of Instructors in your general area that are great sources of info and guidance. In Saint John There is Guro Rob Doley of the Doley Academy, In Fredericton there is Sensei Gilles Jaillet, and Guro Peter Lee. In I know of a gentleman in PEI (Manny.. sorry I can't remember his last name) and there are the Foley Brothers just south of you (I'm trying to remember the name of the town but it escapes me.. Peter if you read this cuold you drop this gentleman a note if you haven't already). Although you will need to travel a bit be assured that there are a lot of VERY well skilled people within weekend seminar distance from you. that combined with videos and dedicated practice can jump start your study tremendously! Good Luck!
