We may never know what combination of social, and psycological forces caused the teens in Colorado to open fire on their classmates, but since then we can be certain that the news coverage and media attention of that event have led to various copy cat incidents. Maybe we should ban the news. ------------------------------ From: John Frankl Date: Sun, 23 May 1999 14:08:18 -0400 (EDT) Subject: eskrima: Bowie and FMA Folks, lets keep the chatter on the topic of FMA. Thanks. Ray Terry raymail@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com Thank you, Ray. Always good to have things tightened up. Q: Is Bowie info. relevant to FMA? It is knife fighting and some do posit an FMA influence in New Orleans at that time. I have over 250 martial arts magazines in a data base so I looked up Santiago and Mexican and I got only Martial Arts Masters, March 1994, page 70 [from the Inside Karate's Master Series]. It has a picture of Rene Latosa on the cover. Names mentioned are Guerra, Orano, and Klemperer. The fighting style references to wing chun. Perhaps one of these guys is on the net by now and may be able to help you in your quest. Good luck... ------------------------------ From: Date: Sun, 23 May 1999 14:01:24 -0700 (PDT) Subject: Re: eskrima: Bowie and FMA > Q: Is Bowie info. relevant to FMA? I assume that Earthlink resolved their open routing problem and so email from that provider is no longer being blocked by relays.orbs.org. Or at least I hope that is the case... So, your email to the list should get through again. I have acquired a number of edged implements which I would like to try out and compare a la Japanese katana cutting practice. Furthermore, I am told by those who should know that if one trains with an edged weapon one should actually practice cutting with it. Please bear in mind that wet rolled tatami mats and condemned prisoners are very hard to come by in this part of the world... Mike Koblic Quesnel BC ------------------------------ From: Michael Koblic Date: Mon, 26 Apr 1999 08:58:55 -0700 Subject: eskrima: Training dummies There are a number of free-standing dummies out on the market with the hitting area shaped like a human torso with a head. I find them rather interesting because: a) They move more realistically than a hanging bag (the head moves more than the torso rather than vice versa) b) Targetting is more realistic (doing elbows or open palm strikes on a cylindrical bag is not a whole lot like hitting someone in the head). Does anyone have experience with such dummies? Are they durable? will they withstand stick strikes? Any particular makes that are recommended? Thanks, Mike Koblic, Quesnel BC ------------------------------ From: "Richard Lin" Date: Mon, 24 May 1999 10:18:04 EDT Subject: eskrima: Stickfighting Tournament in NYC Hello Everyone, First I'd like to take a chance to thank everyone involved in this forum.
