My Sifu gave me an article from the April 1999 issue of Inside Kung-Fu pp 86-87 called _New Training With Used Tires_. It explains how to build a tire makiwara. I have a friend who "obtained" (i don't know how:) half of a telephone pole, chopped it down and put a mook jong in his garden. Basically the article explains how to use old tires etc to build a funky-looking but effective training 'partner'. I would also suggest checking out some Society For Creative Anachronism (SCA) sites - they may have info on training dummies. Hope this helps jocelyne Roaring Girl * Purveyor Of Fine Books * Beater Of Bodhrans * Smiter Of The Wicked * ------------------------------ From: Date: Mon, 24 May 1999 10:52:42 -0700 Subject: eskrima: Bowie John Frankl asked: Q: Is Bowie info. relevant to FMA? It is knife fighting and some do posit an FMA influence in New Orleans at that time. I'm not sure if this is a question about whether it's "OK" to discuss Bowie info on this forum (Ray's balliwick)or whether there was an FMA influence in Bowie's bladework, or whether there was an FMA influence in New Orleans at that point in town. They're all interesting questions though. My understanding is that Bowie bladework of the era was essentially modified sabrework. The only current Bowie bladecraft I've seen is that demonstrated by James keating, and it's very much sabrelike, although I know he also uses Kali in his personal application of the blade. I've enjoyed the thread on Bowie bladework and find it useful. Regarding Filipino influence in New Orleans, Guro dan Inosanto has made reference in his seminars to the Filipinos who fought with Jean Lafitte in the War of 1812, some of whom settled in Louisiana after the war. Perhaps someone like Crafty or Terrie Tippie has more on this. Regards, Rick Lindquist ------------------------------ From: "Todd D. They are of benefit because they relate to mindset, history, culture, violence, and human agression. If these and other topics do not DIRECTLY relate to FMA, they relate to SURVIVAL, honesty, knowledge, history, and self improvement... all reasons we study the arts in the first place. Aren't they? Also remember there are a lot of other forums available for discussions of [insert-non-MA-related-topic-here]. There are literally thousands of news groups and distribution lists for the discussion of everything from bondage to inventive ways to use bananas. This will continue to remain, pretty much, focused on: - Filipino martial arts - FMA history - Indonesian martial arts - Martial arts - Combat weapons training - Seminar/tourny announcements - Filipino culture Ray Terry raymail@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com ------------------------------ From: Date: Mon, 24 May 1999 17:12:10 EDT Subject: eskrima: Re: bowie/ new orleans from:leighans@aol.com why wouldnt some smattering of fma influence be there?....after all spain occupied the philipines for a little while.....and knowlrdge does travel ------------------------------ From: "BILL MCGRATH" Date: Mon, 24 May 1999 19:43:19 -0700 Subject: eskrima: Bowie and FMA This is a multi-part message in MIME format. - ------=_NextPart_000_000B_01BEA61D.AC84CF80 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Did I remember someone on the digest mentioning that Bowies wife may = have been a Filipina and not Spanish as contemporary accounts have said? = I could see how a journalist of that day may not have been able to tell = the difference.
