Try it. The edge has to be quite sharp and must be moving rather quickly to do it. Editor Steven Dick mentions being able to do it with a Cold Steel Bush Ranger, but only at a 45-degree angle. He wasn't able to achieve and oblique cut. - -----== Sent via Deja News, The Discussion Network ==----- http://www.dejanews.com/ Easy access to 50,000+ discussion forums ------------------------------ From: Date: Tue, 25 May 1999 07:13:46 EDT Subject: eskrima: Feinting Hello, I was wondering how any fighters use feinting in their stick fights. I have seen Top Dog do it in the first DB's videos during a knife fight, but it seems like it would be easier with a little weapon like a knife, as opposed to the bigger stick. It looks like it could almost be a wasted shot if you aren't fast enough to redirect after you threw the feint, and that opening could lead to big problems. If you do use feinting, does your follow through shot lack power due to the sudden change of angles? Or do you think it's better to try to make every shot count? I dont know if he is a member or lurking or what not. He is a real history and knife buff who has spent alot of time on this. He speaks Spanish as well, so the texts in Spanish would be available to him. My 2 cents...You wanna get your traditional sets down. Understanding the nuances of applying the traditional sets takes a lot of good practice. Beyond that it depends greatly on what school you're from. You can get some good stuff out of analyzing the variations in how different teachers teach/do the dummy. If you're into JKD there is some awesome stuff in the sets Sigung Lee put together. Much of that is closely held though. Guro Inosanto has indicated that he would like his students to their own sets. You can use the wooden dummy for knife work --gunting, slash-trust type drills. An old friend and training partner in the Northwest, Jeff Brock, used to put carpet on the body of the Mok Jong to protect the wood when doing knife work. He used a lot of triangle footwork to move in, out and between different zones & ranges. I've also seen Damon Carro do some wild Mande Muda Silat work, both high and low on the dummy. He took one of the upper arms off and the middle arm to work some throw position/entry type drills. I brought some Muay Thai guys into a similar conversation, but they wanted to use it primarily for shin conditioning. I wasn't too wild about that because there were a few loose bolts and I didn't want the dummy to get destroyed. I know they cut free-hanging manila rope (1" diameter and anywhere from one to say 10 strands tied together) , two-by-fours (chopping and edge toughness test), aluminum cans filled with water (trying not to tip over base while cutting off top). Finally, and this might be good advice for FMA practice in general, wear eye protection because chips and chunks of rope, wood, aluminum, etc. in the eye are no fun.
