Let's keep it civil guys. If you take offense at something someone has written, please email them privately and see if what you think was the meaning of what they wrote was really what they meant to say. We have all seen occasions on ED in which someone used a bit of humorous sarcasm (with a meaning directly opposite of the literal words used) and someone else took the meaning of the words literally and was offended. Perhaps someone from country "A" (while still fluent in English) may misunderstand the humor of country "B". Each country has subtle shades of meaning that you may not catch if you were not raised in that country (I know I could have used a translator on my last trip to England). Please folks, if we want the digest to continue to serve the very useful purpose that it has been serving, let's speak to each other as if we were a guest in another's home, which in a way we are. Regards, Tuhon Bill McGrath Leaving the Continental Congress after voting on the U.S. Constitution, a woman asked Ben Franklin what kind of government we now had. This reeks, especially considering the people within the MA world who are promoting it. One side of the issue is quite valid: there are a lot of people ripping a lot of other people off by "teaching" a crap. OTOH, there are those who provide good instruction but don't fall within the structure of some McDoj___ ranking system. The one "grandmaster" that I'm thinking of asks white belts in tests: "Now if somebody jump on you ... you kno wwhat to do, right?" Of course the now ego-bloated neophtye says "Yes sir!" and I cringe. Whadda ripoff ... and this guy's a major force behind regulating MA instruction in the state. Why? To promote the success of his well-marketed line of business. Funny thing ... when I taught for the guy his students always improved ... and people "in his pocket" ask him (about me) "Is he qualified?" So, how do we stem the tide of this thing that seems to be starting to pop up before it catches on? Don't just read about it, respond, respond quickly and unequivocally, and get others to do likewise. Otherwise we'll wake up to something that we might not like. All kinds of legislation gets passed without the average bear knowing anything about it ... and sometimes legislation will be put into force in total contradiction of the democrqatically expressed will of the people. If I remember correctly, not long ago judges overturned a Colorado popular vote thereby imposing their liberalist values on all people of the state. That's a scary and dangerous precedent which says that the will of the people becomes meaningless. How does that jibe with "We the People..." There are dirtier words for it, but the "liberalization" of America runs roughshod over the rights of the people. So too will these "regulatory" movements if they ever catch on. Do we need something like the NRA for MA? The NMA maybe :-) Bob Marley say "Stand up for your rights..." I was wondering if there is anyone on the list from New Zealand who could point me to some FMA and/or IMA instructors in that country. If I can't find anyone to train with, maybe I can find a few people willing to learn? My wife and I have kicked around the idea of moving there for a number of years and are looking into it again. Anyway, any information would be greatly appreciated. My comments on Americans being smarter was sarcastic. I know that is not true and that in many contries that become dictatorships the people thought it could not happen here. I was attacking the typical American mentality that we are somhow "special" and will always be free without fighting for our freedom. Most Americans would have dismissed my comments about Marcos by saying,"That is in a third world country, America is different." As for the situation in the Philippines, I was there when martial law was declared (and left soon after) and my family was active in the MFP. My grandfather was a popular opposition leader and mayor of Zamboanga until being assasinated by one of Marcos' statist death squads in 1984. I apologize for any misunderstanding. Reading the bios of the masters in Guro Inosanto's book was very interesting. Are there any female GM's? Are there a greater number of female instructors in FMA than other MA's? Relating to the mail copied below. As a UK member there are threads like the gun control and constitutional issues that really mean nothing to people out side of the north American continent. I admit that I try and follow some of the ramblings but become aware that it is often an intellectual professional debate between a couple of members of this list who tend to use a lot of abbreviations uncommon outside their profession or state. However I do have a scroll button but I appreciate that I am at work and therefore not paying per byte in the same way that some people are. These discussions therefore must cost some people tomorrow nights supper and that is I guess the problem. I am personally aware that the likes of Crafty and some others do tend to go on but out of this we tend to get the occasional gem! For that I happily scroll on! Animal quoted a message dated 7/3/99 writes:<< > Americans are smarter and will never follow a dictator. >> which I must have missed while enthusiastically scrolling down! ; ) This made me laugh as it did animal. I wonder how many Americans own a passport? The answer is I am told very few. I know some great americans, people who really are intelligent, funny and cultured. Then I know some who don't know where half the world is because they cant see beyond their own backyard! Hang in there now im having fun! Their lives are governed by the tv schedule and the percentage of obesity in the population indicates that 24 hour donut lifestyles are really doing wonderful business. When over in March in LA, we were trying to catch the news on the start of war in Kosova, but this came third on the news order behind less important issues IMO. Maybe this attitude pops back to the days of isolationism in the 1920/30's while mine pops back to the days of colonialism when us brits tore round the world kicking ass! Mind you it was the 4th of July yesterday but I wonder if that is BigMac day? Of course I could point to the scum that live in crack estates not three miles from where I sit but hey! I never said that we were smarter did I? Im not going to talk about the sophistication of the european continent because really I don't give a damn and it's the wrong list. But this blind comment is thankfully not common to the list which encourages investigating different cultures. But when TAD mentions that the language and attitudes are" unprofessional, rude, arrogant, condescending and sarcastic" then I shout hallelujah! Honest mate, come to the other lists I am on and then you will realise what a polite list this is. I have actually turned up for a fight with a scandinavian gentlemen who had told me that he was going to rip me apart. Needless to say he didn't turn up when his soccer team came to play but I was there just in case. This list, believe me is full of gentlemen and Rockys escapades are really mild compared to other lists. Now im off to read the archives to catch up with those mails that I scrolled past and missed the exciting bits Keep it up lads! The list is great and like any list it has its moments, but it is really one of the better ones. Pat Aberdeen Martial Arts Group From: "TAD" > Snip I think that the discussion/thread on gun control (pro or con) is getting a bit out of hand. snip In the interest of the purpose of this email list, please moderate the discussion and discourage members from discussing non-eskrima related matters. This topic is beginning to be a big turn-off. I am sure to others feel the same way but would rather suffer in silence. Another item to note is that the language and tone for this particular thread has been markedly unprofessional, rude, arrogant, condescending and sarcastic. I snip I am sure that there are a lot of discussion groups through email and on the web that will be able to acommodate the varied non-eskrima interests of our members and friends. As another alternative, I offer that members who wish to continue to discuss this matter amongst themselves could go offline end exchange email with each other. ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Mon, 5 Jul 1999 08:47:46 -0700 (PDT) Subject: eskrima: list issues > But when TAD mentions that the language and attitudes are" unprofessional, > rude, arrogant, condescending and sarcastic" then I shout hallelujah!
