Thanks Tom Ochs ------------------------------ From: Kalki Date: Mon, 05 Jul 1999 12:36:16 -0500 Subject: eskrima: Smarter Thanks to Ben for the clarification. One of the dynamics that I've encouraged in teaching "Self Mastery" in the past regarding communication is that in good communication both/all parties are individually 100% responsible for the outcome of the communication. Reading Ben's post (and Tuhon McGrath's) reminded me of one of the steps in good communication. Imagine two "handshaking" digital devices. When one sends (speaks), the other receives (listens), aftwer which it responds to acknowledge that it has received and then queries the sender, sorta like: "Is this what you said?" -or- "Is this what you meant?" before replying. It can take more time but it works: Active listening, taking the time to hear out what someone has to say ... even if we disagree with it. Consider, the best way to argue through someone's (il)logic is to hear it all and take notes so that we can answer the (il)logic successfully ... after the speaker has vented :-) There's a psycho-dynamic in there that I won't get into ... may not work all of the time (see Getting To Yes), but in a "forum" like this, the workplace, etc. it can be ++helpful. We don't have to be in agreement with something to listen to it, and if we take the time to listen we may learn something that we REALLY need to know. Old saying: The fool is his own informer? Sometimes it's difficult to listen, but only because of emotional stuff inside ourselves. Emotion gets in the way of reasoning if/when we listen "against" and we can miss the point of what the other is trying to say ... then the communication breaks down and reasoning goes out the window. A little more listening "to" and questioning can prevent jumps to conclusions and save a lot of grief. We don't have to be in agreement with someone to listen to them, and if we take the time to listen we may learn something that we REALLY need to know. Old saying: The fool is his own informer? Be well, Mik ------------------------------ From: "Branwen Thomas" Date: Mon, 5 Jul 1999 14:57:08 -0230 Subject: eskrima: decorous lists & Inosanto book 1.it's true, this list is much more polite - the influence of martial arts training & philosophy, perhaps? I've been on traditional music lists (bodhran - irish skin drum) where the guinness-fueled verbal mayhem became fairly intense, and usually about opinion differences e.g. which version of a song was older, what burns with more heat - fiddle or accordeon....;) 2. Yes please, for any available info on women in the FMA. 3.Guro Dan Inosanto's book is out-of-print, but if you check your local used bookstores, or check online at Amazon, you may be able to locate a used copy. Also, PUBLIC LIBRAIRIES!! I sell books for a living, but given the costs of books and the cool stuff that goes out of print, I highly recommend the use of librairies for those with few funds, or looking for obscure references. Also, if your library carries magazines, you can photocopy pertinent articles for personal use/reference. If you find a good book, buy it. Books stay in print as long as the publisher knows they can sell copies. I pray to the great book gods that Guro Dan will get his book reprinted, and any other writings he's got... :) cheers, jocelyne Roaring Girl * Purveyor Of Fine Books * Beater Of Bodhrans * Smiter Of The Wicked * * Owned By Angus, Most Elegant And Pleasing Of Cats * ------------------------------ From: "arlan and angel sanford" Date: Mon, 5 Jul 1999 20:12:24 -0600 Subject: eskrima: invite The Santa Fe chapter of Dog Brothers (aka "Stray Dogs") would like announce a small invitational weekend of stick fighting. We will be fighting here in Santa Fe on November 6th and 7th. Planing on attending are myself (Salty dog), Marc "Crafty Dog" Denny and Eric "Top Dog" Knaus. This will be the first time all three of us have fought together in several years. If you have wanted to try a little "Dog Brothers" fighting and haven't been able to attend a gathering, this will be a good time to give it a shot. We plan on lots of fights and lots of food afterward. Santa Fe is a great place in November, with lots to see when you're not busy fighting. Participation will be by invitation only and Invitations will be limited to 10 fighters. Fighters will have a minimum of five fights each day, hopefully allowing a fighter to fight with everyone present at least once. (The last get-together here, most of us had 15 to 18 fights.) We would like to attract a good quality group of fighters who would like to push themselves and see what they are capable of. These will be tough fights. If you think you would like to join us, please contact me. I was wondering if there is anyone on the list from New Zealand who could point me to some FMA and/or IMA instructors in that country. If I can't find anyone to train with, maybe I can find a few people willing to learn? My wife and I have kicked around the idea of moving there for a number of years and are looking into it again. hi Bill, I am in Aberdeen Scotland and have two friends visiting today that are both from the south island, Christchurch they run a Muay Thai school which by all accounts is doing very well. They moved there a couple of years ago (Brett came from the area originally) and have some interesting stories to tell about setting yp their school. Brett won the British light heavyweight Muay Thai title under Master Sken. Brett will be training with me this week learning heaps of FMA and has trained with Rick Faye and at Dan Inosantos school during a visit the other year. I have copied them to this message but don't expect a reply till later this month when they get home. While they do not say that they teach FMA, they don't, Brett and Catherine are very interested and already have knowledge of some other schools in that area of the world. Ill be seeing them later on today for the first timein a while so any other info I will pass on pat ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Tue, 6 Jul 1999 06:16:24 -0700 (PDT) Subject: eskrima: . ------------------------------ End of Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V6 #287 **************************************** To unsubscribe from this digest, eskrima-digest, send the command: unsubscribe eskrima-digest -or- unsubscribe eskrima-digest your.old@address in the BODY of email (top line, left justified) addressed to majordomo@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com.
