"Yeah, I've done that. Oww, I hate it when that happens." Nobody can stop you from being lazy but you. Sometimes with MA or any other exercise you can ease yourself back into it. Get a pair of 28 inch steel pipes, have the hardware store bevel the ends. Should cost you $8 or so. Do sinawalli with them. Slowly. Feel how different it is from normal sticks. When you can't do any more, pick up some normal rattan sticks and swing em. It will feel like nothin. Just an idea for getting back into it, those off times can be a bear. I can't always go to class because of work hours but I can always swing sticks... ------------------------------ From: Paolo Valladolid Date: Tue, 13 Jul 1999 00:12:05 -0400 Subject: eskrima: Re: Dry spells... >From: "J H" >Date: Sun, 11 Jul 1999 20:44:40 GMT >Subject: eskrima: Re: Dry spells... > >Hello, y'all! > >I just had a question for all of you out there: Have any of you ever hit a >serious dry spell in your training??? I did not train for almost a year because of a demanding work schedule. When my career brought me across the country to yet another job where I often work extra hours, I decided to look for teachers offering classes at 8 or even 9pm and on weekends. There are now a couple of schools I can go to fairly regularly. One is the house of one teacher who works swing shifts so I can only get him 2-3 times a month until he retires. The other is a school that offers FMA at 9pm twice a week and groundfighting once a week at 9pm. If I can get out from work "early" enough, I can make their Jun Fan classes at 8pm. There's even yet another teacher who teaches Indo MA one weeknight a week at 9:15pm and on Sat. and Sun. afternoons but my brain can only process so much info at once and the commute time is a real pain, even though I thoroughly enjoyed the few workouts I had with him. Yes, what little basics I had such as footwork and posture was gone from the MA layoff, but I just try to get a little better and learn a little bit more every day. I'd like to know, regardless of the circumstances( i.e., injury, etc.) surrounding the dry spell. Thanks! Yes. I took custody of my 5 yr old son 6 years ago while completing my final year in University and working four nights on the nightclub door. THis obviously affected my training schedule but I did manage to keep the maintenance side to gether. What I learnt is that you have to keep something - - anything - going and keep it simple if only a run. Carenza before a run is a great way to loosen up for example. Its easier to put it off till tomorrow but then its harder to start up again. Best to keep ticking over even if only doing minor things. I have a bad knee now after having a cracked rib earlier this year. This is affecting how I train but you can always work around it. There is always people in worst positions than us who manage it so there should be no excuse. There is always something you can do. Set a time for it. Take the phone off the hook and nothing must disturb that time pat ------------------------------ From: "Dave Huang" Date: Tue, 13 Jul 1999 06:47:50 PDT Subject: eskrima: Profiles: Cacoy Canete In looking at the resources available for FMA practitioners, there does not seem to be a lot of academic/biographical materials. So far, Inosanto, Wiley, Sulite, Marinas have actually published books containing on FMA, some containing biographical info on various masters. I thought it might be interesting to post profiles on some of the more influential figures we train with, partially as a tribute, also, as a record or resource for other people seeking more information on other styles outside their own. Following is a profile on GM "Cacoy" Canete, one of the famous Canete Brothers, and a true legend in the FMA community. I received this from Sifu Richard Bustillo who gave me permission to post it on the digest. - --------------------------------------------------------------- Biographical Profile of the Martial Arts Career of Grand Master Ciriaco "Cacoy" Canete Introduction Grand Master Ciriaco Canete is the youngest of the eight famous Canete brothers of Cebu, Philippines, who co-founded the world-renowned Doce Pares Eskrima Club in 1932. This biographical profile presents the highlights of the martial arts career of Grand Master Canete, now the world’s only officially recognized 12th Dan Grand Master Eskrimador. Grand Master Canete is one of the original co-founders of Doce Pares Eskrima Club which he and his brothers originated in Cebu City, in 1932. Following the death of his brother, Eulogio "Yoling" Canete, he succeeded to the Presidency of Doce Pares in June, 1988 and he holds that position today. In November, 1995, the Doce Pares Eskrima Club was officially renamed the Doce Pares Eskrima Eskrido Pangamot Federation. But the name Doce Pares is still associated throughout the world with the club that Grand Master Ciriaco Canete and his brothers co-founded in 1932. The headquarters and training gym on C. Padilla St., in Cebu City, still carry the traditions of almost 68 years of Doce Pares leadership in Philippine martial arts. Grand Master Canete began his martial arts career with boxing at just five years of age. At seven years he began to study and practice Eskrima. Since the age of 15 he remains undefeated in over 100 no-holds-barred Eskrima combat challenges (fought without head or body armor.)
