My name is Joe McCray - I've been living in Japan for about 4 years. I'm a JKD/FMA/BJJ/Shooto type guy. I'll be in Arizona for about 6 months, and then I'll be going to Colorado. I'm interested in training. My interests are: 1. Training 2. Training 3. Training 4. Training 5. Training I plan to train anywhere that I can and I plan to compete in grappling tournaments all over California, Nevada, & Arizona (I'm not tooting my own horn - I'm not the best anything - I'm not some champion title holder or anything like that), if anybody trains or teaches pretty much anything functional send me a private email. Cause I want to train with you. I haven't been in America for a long time, and I don't want it to be like it was for me when I moved here. It was almost a year for I for Sifu Nakamura's IUMA (Inosanto Unified Martial Arts) - and then another year before I found a BJJ/Shooto Academy to train at. I'm gonna be living in a small town called Yuma Arizona (The armpit of Arizona). The city has 3 Tae Kwon Do schools and that's it - not even a boxing gym. I don't have anything against TKD, but I'm looking for FMA/JKD/BJJ/Shooto/NHB/Silat/Bando/DBMA - Somebody please gimme something functional. Also I'm planning to start a Submission Wrestling Club, so if anybody has a club or school that does grappling please email me. I'd love to hook up with you. I need to start a club so I can have a place to practice. Once I've got a club going - I'd love to bring my guys to your gym or school for training and/or Seminars, and of course anybody will be welcome to come down to our place. Please e-mail me if you can help: Joe McCray kenjoe@yta.attmil.ne.jp or you_know_who26@hotmail.com Thanks in advance, Joe ------------------------------ From: "C. Herrman" Date: Sat, 17 Jul 1999 14:14:15 -0400 Subject: eskrima: limiting attachments... Regarding the potential hassle of large e-mail attachments: In Eudora there is a preference (Special -> Settings -> Checking Mail -> Skip Messages Over ___ k) which allows you to limit the size of attachments to any incoming mail. The message still appears in your mailbox with a note that says "The remainder of this ____ k message has not been transferred." The attachment does stay in your mail server account (and takes up valuable real estate). You have two options at this point. 1) if it is an attachment you would like to receive, change your preferences to accept an attachment of that size and "check mail" again. The message will be downloaded to your "in" box with the attachment intact 2) call your service provider and ask them to delete the attachment from your mail server account. This should only take a few minutes. I'm not sure how this works with other e-mail software, but there is probably a similar solution. Good Luck, Chris H. student: EEMD, Boston, MA ------------------------------ From: "Michael Kitchen" Date: Sat, 17 Jul 1999 18:03:25 -0400 Subject: eskrima: Achillies rehab 2 Okay.. so they removed the staples 2 weeks after surgery. It's not painful but very annoying..like someone sticking you with a straight pin..30 times. I wear the Cam-Walker while I am crutching around. When not on-the-go (as it is) I am flexing and moving the ankle/achillies tendon as much as possible. Toes-up, toes-down (repeat). Monday the 12th I had a visit with the surgeon (Dr. G) and obtained a copy of the surgical narritative..interesting things you find in there. It turns out that during the surgery/repair not only did he repair the achillies tendon, he added another tendon into the repair! It says, "The plantaris tendon was then cut proximally and it was weaved through the repair, brought back on itself and then tied to itself, and over the distal stump. The plantaris tendon was sutured to the tendon repair construct again using 0 Ethibond sutures. ..... This provided a very stable repair. .... The patient (that would be me) .... tolerated the procedure well." {no kidding... I was in La-La Land} I asked the Dr. about this and he said, "Oh, that tendon isn't used any more." So it happens to be a handy-helper for surgical repair of the Achillies. Uhh.... well..... okay then works for me. During the Monday visit the Dr. gave me my prescription for Physical Therapy. I went to the first session on Thursday. Wonderful! It hurt to use the muscle/tendon again but I am just happy to be able to *use* them. An added bonus: my Physical Therapist is *very* familiar with the treatment/article "'Managing Achilles Tendon Disorders in the Athlete: from Stretching to Surgery" (www.biomech.com archives) and also believes that early mobility is the key to better/faster recovery. He was happy with the range of motion in my repaired ankle and said that the static (non-load bearing) stretching that I had been doing was a 'good thing.' Told me that I will be walking without crutches in two weeks and that I can stand now, using the Cam-Walker.. YAH-HOO!! I took my daughter to our (her's now) Saturday class and while they were in the other room kicking pads, I found a partner to work on Open 4/ Open 6/ Sinawalli 6 (while *standing*!). Maaaan... it has never felt better to swing sticks in my life! So, five weeks later I am swinging sticks (but no kicks). Thanks to all for your e-mails. There are plenty of people in Cebu who will TRY to teach you Balintawak and its pretty easy to get sucked in. Generally I don't go into the lineage bullshit but in this case you might find it useful. Whoever you want to train with ask them how the lineage traces back to Anciong Bacon and if they can't tell you give them a miss. Balintawak in Cebu became extremely fragmented after the deaths of the major GM's Bacon, Villasin and Velez. Their respective clubs in reality ceased to exist although in Velez's (and maybe Villasin's) case their sons still train foreign students. >You can call Raul Bunalos 232-3623 who is a Senior instructor of the >Doce Pares (Cacoy) system and a Senior instructor of Yaw-Yan (w/c I >believe uses balintawak system for their eskrima training). If you want to learn Doce Pares contact Cacoy directly Doce Pares Headquarters 81A C.Padilla St. Cebu City, Cebu Philippines BUT if you want to learn Balintawak don't train with the Doce Pares or any other club that tells you they train in Balintawak if they call themselves something else. Henry Jayme teaches Velez style Balintawak and was his last senior student.
