Ray Terry, PO Box 110841, Campbell, CA 95011 FMA@MartialArtsResource.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Eric Primm" Date: Mon, 19 Jul 1999 23:02:25 CDT Subject: eskrima: Trapping Range Hello everyone! I happened to be browsing the Dog Brother's website where I read an article by Guro Crafty (an interesting read by the way) about trapping. The article brought up a few questions that I would appreciate any thoughts or comments that anyone on the list is willing to give me. This may have been covered on the list before, and if it has let me know and I will check the back issues. The article mentioned that Burton Richardson doesn't emphasize trapping as much any more due to the face that people are tending to crash through that range to take you down. The art that I train most is Inosanto Blend Kali, and I prefer the totally offensive trapping that I am shown. I prefer to fight in trapping range, but against a grappler, my trapping rarely shows up. This led me to my first question. Do we follow Guro Richardson's lead and train harder in the other ranges? Or do we (or extremely knowledgeable people that know both grappling and FMA) create drills/training methods to trap against a grappler? Second question: If we do try to create those drills and fail, does that make trapping range obsolete in a street confrontation? To clarify things, I intended this to be empty hand trapping versus empty hand. Trapping range, to me, is the distance between where the farthest knee that can be thrown will effectively strike someone and just before you hit the ground. I look forward to any comments or thoughts that anyone wishes to throw my way. I was wondering if anyone had a wish list of places that they recommend to train. I would like to train JKD/FMA/BJJ or any combo of them. Any advice on good places to move and train would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in Advance, Turk Corley i would also recomend so cal. - within a 1/2 to 1 hour drive from downtown you can train with a vast number of the worlds greatest MA in all forms -- i theorize the resean being - the weatuher, the proximitiy to asia, the access to people with a lot of money willing to spend ungodly amounts on their hobbies, and the chance at fame and fortunes in the movies -- with the exception of NYC - most states have 1 maybe 2 "big name" MA - in so cal (LA) we practically have 1 on every coner - Cacoy lives in the US doesnt he -- Dionisio lives in and heads the training in cebu - why not go to bacold there are many GM's there - you could train with GT Gaje' - as far as big e-mails - www.click2send.com allows uploads of files there for free, they give you a mailbox -- then you can tell others where to d/l if they wish -- just a thought steve ------------------------------ From: "Branwen Thomas" Date: Tue, 20 Jul 1999 10:41:30 -0230 Subject: eskrima: down time thanks to all who sent video suggestions...our club was recently (wrongfully) asked to leave(polite version) our training space, and while we are diligently searching for a place, the only training I have at the moment is at home (low ceilings- not good) and when a few of us senior students get together in the park. So watching videos (training & movies) provides some mental stimulation, as well as the impetus to keep training at home - I also suffer from "training slump", mainly because I prefer to train with others and tend to procrastination when alone. the problem with living on a rock in the middle of the Atlantic (Newfoundland) is that we don't have seminars unless we bring instructors in (very expensive!), we are the only club certified to teach FMA/JKD/JunFan, and I personally (& probably most others) just don't have the funds to fly to places simply to attend a seminar. We have some contact with other styles/clubs, but I'm new enough to MA that I want to get a better grip on this art before starting something else. At any rate, I am mightily pleased with this list, and the opportunity it affords me to learn more. Thanks everyone, and especially Ray, and I hope you are up and swinging sticks again soon.
