I have two experiences to relate. The first, my ex-sparring partner was a traditional Shorin-Ryu guy, nothing else besides karate. Trapping would not work against him at all. When I would move in, engage, then move to trap/check, he would simply blast me in the chest. However, I have used trapping very successfully at work (corrections) against seasoned street fighters who were really trying to hurt me. Seems that trapping will work against the committed blow, but isn't the thing to do against the typical "snapped" karate punch. (As a sidenote, I used trapping in my old boxing class against my partners with great success, but I would only get away with it until they caught on). I'm a trapper, always have been, and to me, I tend to go with what I've used successfully. However, as in the case with my karate friend, whom I beat by stepping back and resorting to pure boxing, it's good to have something in reserve. Don't move in to trap, but have it honed to the point that it happens spontaneously when needed. We trained the daylights out of chi sao and hubad in the old days, and it does pay off. Regarding Eric Primm's comments on training ranges, I'd be interested in people's opinions on the subject also, as well as any suggestions on increasing effectiveness (other than train, cross-train, and train some more ;), since I do not have the weight, I think , to really be an effective grappler. I love trapping, but am aware that many fights end up quickly in grappling range, and so I'd like to read other's thoughts on the subject. Probly because it was the most "effectively spectacular" things which many of us first enconterd on our JKD journey. It was(and is) the range where "most" weapons can be brought to bear. However---and this address' the problem spoken of earlier--Our concepts of trapping is what must be addapted and is that which must evolve. When most people think of trapping the first thing they think of is the --poc sau-lop sau combo. This is where the problem lies. The confines of one style(Wing Chun) must not put limitations on our approuch to the concept of trapping.Likewise Brazilian JJ must not put limitations on our concept of grappling. The greater concept here is range. Without a doubt Wing Chun is the most influintial art in the trapping segment of our JKD experince.Perhaps some of us(me) need to back-up and look at the bigger picture of the five ways of attack.Trapping is mearly an expression of attack.Be it from the "trapping" range or from the ground. Sorry for getting long winded! I'll shut up. ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Wed, 21 Jul 1999 23:12:10 -0700 (PDT) Subject: eskrima: I'm back... Surgery over.
