I was being treated for a back injury after a major car accident, so that is why I was seeing a PT. The stretching routine was part of my therapy. When I started to train again, I did the basic stretches I had done before but only had marginal improvements. I did some FREE research to improve my routine and get the best results for my effort. Many people believe they have a good stretching routine, but are actually doing ineffective or harmful stretches. Maintaining flexibility is easier than achieving it. The person I replied to was asking for advice to improve their flexibility. So I gave them some suggestions for designing an effective routine and a little physio-background information. Correct information is always good and simple solutions are not always better. However, my routine takes about 15 min to do including a warm-up... not too complicated.. On to other things...Mik is correct. You should stretch accessory muscles and the small muscles in synergistic muscle groups before stretching larger muscles. After reading the my post I realized what I meant to say is that you should do static before dynamic stretches to prevent muscle damage during the warm up. Also stretch after exercise to prevent tightening up and improve recovery time. During the post exercise stretch, do dynamic then static stretches. NEVER do the PNF method to stretch back muscles involved in supporting the spine or any other structural support muscles which may cause joint instability. . Yep, you can see Richard flying through the air with the greatest of ease in Steve Plink's video. This is why A) I say Steve Plink is the most dangerous hand to hand fighter I have ever met in my life and B) If Richard and I attacked him together with knives if we are lucky we could piss him off enough to kill us quickly. If you are ever up in Portland area I highly recommend you go look up Steve to learn. ------------------------------ From: Jeff Brooks Date: Mon, 2 Aug 1999 09:33:39 -0700 Subject: eskrima: stretching Thanks for the stretching info, Mik. As one rehabing a knee, I found the notion of calf flexibility limiting hamstring stretch interesting. I never thought to look at that side of the joint, and will try stretching with that idea in mind. And, can you elaborate on the reasons for stretching the hip flexors more than the hamstrings? Jeff Brooks ------------------------------ From: "Haru Taka" Date: Mon, 02 Aug 1999 16:58:36 GMT Subject: eskrima: Angel Cabales A friend of mine and I recently began discussing Angel Cabales' death matches. We are specifically interested in knowing about the culture surrounding the idea of a death match and about the ethical concerns (if any) that Angel had with life-ending confrontations. How, exactly did death matches begin. I have four specific questions regarding this issue: 1) Were death matches planned (i.e., did 2 fighters challenge each other with the understood goal being to kill the other fighter)? 2) Were death matches called such because of the fight's outcome (i.e., was the name "death match" then given to the fight if one person was incidentally killed in a confrontation)? 3) Was death simply an understood possible outcome of a confrontation (i.e., was the goal simply to go for an open target, fatal or not)? 4) Were death matches issues of self-defense (i.e., were they called "death matches" only because a fighter was assaulted and defended himself or herself with deadly force)? What were Angel Cabales' ethical concerns with death matches? Only two questions for this one: 1) First of all did Angel Cabales even have any ethical concerns with killing an opponent or was killing an opponent just an accepted way to end a confrontation in Angels culture (like the samurai in Feudal Japan)? 2) Did Angel instigate death matches or was he usually the person who was challenged? Please keep in mind that I am not concerned with thinking about Angel Cabales as an ethical man who never started confrontations with others and who never had the intent to kill his opponent. I understand that cultures differ throughout time, and thus if Angel Cabales' mind set during his life was one of "intent to kill" in order to either test his superior fighting ability or defend himself (similar to the Samurai), I will not loose respect for him nor for the fighting system he developed. If whom ever responds to my questions would rather not post this in the next Eskrima Digest issue, I would appreciate a direct response to my e-mail address instead.
