FWIW, in Modern Arnis, GM Remy Presas has issued/bestowed the title upon 3 people. I know two of them, Kelly Worden, and Dieter Kneuttel; unfortunately, I do not know who the third one is. Regardless, in Modern Arnis, the people having the title "Datu" were given that title by Remy Presas; they did not assume it by themselves. In terms of appropriateness, I really can't speak either way on the situation (I am not familiar enough with the Filipino culture to make those statements.). Personally, the titles don't really matter either way to me; either I can learn something from an individual, or I can't. But, that's just me... and I certainly respect the cultural respect that the title 'Datu' invokes... Mike Worth ------------------------------ From: "Jason Inay" Date: Tue, 03 Aug 1999 11:06:35 PDT Subject: eskrima: Regulating Martial Arts The problem with that Bill "Kim the parent" is this: First and foremost a government that governs least governs best. This is the territory of the free market. If people are not responsible enough to interview and investigate a school then they are at fault. Our economic environment already provides a means to control the quality of training. It is merely up to the consumer to control the market. Unfortunately what you see is a plethora of businesses under the guise of martial arts schools that really provide a day care service. This is not the intention of the schools, I believe. I believe the consumer has pushed our industry towards this. Now, I am not saying that there are no rewards to teaching children, teaching children is important and highly rewarding. I have been to numerous schools across the U.S. and some in Canada, and too often do I see parents drop off the kids at Karate Class so they can get some peace, or go shopping, etc. Rare is the parent (and commendable) that actually takes an active role in their child's martial training. So they would rather have the government make up for the inattentive parenting, so they can pursue whatever leisure endeavor fancies them. Moreover, insofar as regulating the instructors, there are numerous organizations that do so, look on the Internet. We do not need the government to tell us what is right, it is time for us to stop asking for hand holding, otherwise that hand hold will eventually be a full joint lock. With our rights and freedoms slowly eroding away we do not need to hasten the process. Please follow Guro Crafty's lead and protest this bill and all others of it's ilk. It is time for us as a people to take responsibility for ourselves. If martial artists can not do it, then I do not think anyone can. I will site one of the Maxims of the Shogun from the Takogawa Dynasty (I think) "Blame yourself, not others" Sorry about the tirade..... One is Allan Sachetti's (forgive me if I misspelled your name) organization which sells FMA supplies and videos. I personally don't feel that this would be seen as an insult to anyone (I could be wrong), but having met Mr. Sachetti, I would assume that the name was chosen out of respect for Lapu Lapu and other heroes of these arts we so arduously study and adore. The other reference is "Datu Kelly Worden." I have heard that Remy Presas bestowed this title on Mr. Worden ... but I can't vouch for the source of this information. Perhaps someone closer to Mr. Worden, or GM Presas can verify this. I know very little about Worden other than some of the stuff he claims in ads for his videos. I don't know if he's any good or not. Are there that many other people using this title? Or is it just one guy who caused Mr. Taimanglo to raise this issue? I will CC Mr. Taimanglo this e-mail. I don't know if Poppa Ray will want this to continue on the list or not ... but now that the subject has been raised, I am curious. Can anyone shed any more light on this? I'm not talking about Jimmy's training tapes; rather, I'm referring to videos which focused strictly on Angel and Jimmy. The video names are "Eskrima: Basic Strikes and Counters" and "Eskrima: Free Sparring." Does any one know about these videos? How is the quality of the videos (i.e., the actual shooting of the videos, not the demonstrated techniques)? Where I can obtain copies of both videos?
