Oh well like my father said, it builds character, of course you are a character!!" Rock, Always a pleasure to help further your reputation *lol* And for those on the list who have never had the opportunity to work out and learn from Rocky you should make sure you get the chance. Between his stick\open hand drills and techniques and his Ukranian Grappeling there is just not enough time in the average seminar to get more than a taste of what Rocky has to offer. I was very impressed by the (and excuse the spelling, Rock should appreciate that) the "tubok drill" that reminded me of Kenpo techniques where the attacker was then allowed to block the defenders counter attacks. Phil "Rhino Style" ps.. Rock... "Rhino Slayer?" ... You should know me better than that, you gotta kill a Rhino because we are some of those poor dumb animals that have more balls than brains and just keep comming. So I look forward to the next time you kick my ass and I get to walk away (with a limp) having learned some excellant stuff. ------------------------------ From: "boloman" Date: Tue, 10 Aug 1999 09:32:50 -0800 Subject: eskrima: You're welcome I've been just lurking lately, but on behalf of IESA, I have to respond to the nice things that were said by Mike Casto and Al Sardinas. It was a pleasure to have you guys visit our school in San Francisco. It's good for the instructors as well as our students to see other styles practiced so we can see how they are interconnected with our own ways of doing things. Of course, seeing the differences can be enlightening as well, and can keep us from the dangers of 'thinking in the box'. It is always good to meet with people who are sincere, creative, and dedicated to their arts. These visits to our school have shown us the kind of friendly exchange of knowledge that can happen once eskrimadors (or any martial artist) check their egos at the door. You guys are welcome to visit again anytime, and we look forward to opportunities to visit your respective home turfs as well. If this has been announced already, I apologize for the duplication, but I just came across a website that looks like it's a project by Bakbakan International to publish the text of the book via the internet. Looks like they're up into Chapter 14 out of 29, as well as the front and back matter. Hats off to Mr. Reynaldo S. Galang and Bakbakan Intl. for their generosity. http://www.bakbakan.com/swishkb.html [If it matters, to my knowledge I have never had any contact with BI or any person affiliated with it. I just stumbled across the site looking for the "Stereoscopic Images of the Philippine-American War"--if someone has THAT link and could either email me it or post it, I'd appreciate it.] Regards, David bd837@scn.org ------------------------------ From: TCSNo@aol.com Date: Tue, 10 Aug 1999 14:30:30 EDT Subject: eskrima: Bunch -o-stuff Just some thoughts on some ongoing threads..... JKD and Concepts----the ideas of research and development live on. You have to adapt. The fighters of the sixties on not the fighters of the nineties. Lee had trouble with a Thai in a sparring match on the set of "Fist of Fury". This was some club fighter, not a champion. Everybody has to adapt. Pendekar DeThouars changed djuru's to deal with western punching, Dr. Gyi no doubt adapted to his environment, even the Brazilians are adapting to advanced leg locking and getting grounded and pounded by bigger, more attribute laden, western wrestlers. Practicing the Jun Fan curriculum specifically to deal with only the '60's reverse punch and side kick will not get you ready for Tyson's left hook, Rob Kaman's round kick, or Jean Jaques' submissions. We are in the days of Mac-10 disarms, not six shooters and cowboys,.....even girls who powerlift, can do more than Chuck Norris or Mike Stone ever dreamed of. Our instructor focussed primarily on single stick skills like disarms, strikes, takedowns, counters to disarms, counters to the counters, and coordination building drills. The system has an AMAZING siniwalli progression that I think is truly super! It takes a student from complete Frankenstein to complex weaving of the sticks. Very impressive. We actually did very little empty hand or kicking techniques. And what we did do was primarily taken from my instructors background in Karate. Peter and I introduced them to Silat and slowly (I know Peter is grinning while he reads this) influenced the group into using more fluid and flowing techniques like Parry/Check, High Gaurd, Pak Sao, etc. I am not sure how the curriculum at the Winnipeg School addresses this area. We also found very little coverage of Espada y Daga, the curriculum instead focussed primarily on practical usage of the knife as a solo weapon and leaning how to deal with being on the unfriendly side of it. The emphasis was ALWAYS on keeing it simple and effective and not getting "fancy". Again, I am not sure if the same approach is present in the Winnipeg School but it certainly was the focus in Gilles Teachings. >I think that the school used to be over on Notre Dame Avenue, but it >recently popped like a back yard mushroom on Arlington Street >instead.
