When I started sparring hard with sticks I also noticed that my stick would start slipping out of my hand and that I would have to break from the sparring to re-adjust my grip. I also started sparring with a thin stick (about 1 inch in diameter). My instructor told me to try "stick walking" and start practicing with thicker sticks. Now I practice with sticks of one and a half to two inches in diameter and do "stick walking" exercises with thick sticks or lead pipes. Since then I have noticed a dramatic increase in my grip-strength and during sparring my stick rarely slips. Just for everyone's info, stick walking is done by holding the stick vertically (i.e., perpendicular to the ground) between your thumb and your other fingers. You must start the exercise by holding the stick at its top end and pushing it up with your finger-tips until you get to the other end of the stick (i.e., the sticks moves up and your hand remains in one place), then repeat the exercise about 10 times for each hand. The motion should look as if your fingers are "walking" down the length of the stick. It worked for me! Try it out and see if it works for you! - -Haru _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. It do it by spear is definitely another. I wouldn't even entertain by knife unless you like to bleed ;) Uhh, do pigs grow tusks? The wild boar on Hawaii sure do, not the barnyard variety For you anti-hunting people out there, >> Life feeds on life, in most cases and definitely true for humans. Anti-hunting types have no logical argument verses this hence none that can be substantiated against hunting from a moral standpoint.. provided what is taken is eaten anyhow... but back to FMA. A new model folder by Kershaw that has their new 'assisted opening' opening system. 3.25" blade, 7.75" overall, thumb stud, black metal clip attached on the pivot end, liner lock. But the fun part is the assisted opening system. You only have to thumb the stud about 1/4" and the blade flicks open and locks on its own. The Kershaw rep claimed that it was legal in California, i.e. not considered an auto knife. I've been carrying it the past month, hope the rep is right... :) Ray Terry rterry@best.com ------------------------------ From: Kel620@aol.com Date: Thu, 12 Aug 1999 23:12:32 EDT Subject: eskrima: Re: Just the thing! Wild boar hunting with knives is also done in the Continental USA(Arkansas and the South). There is a custom knife maker named Larry Harley that makes heavy duty double edged blades for this purpose. He also guides hunts. His knives were used in Desert Storm by special operations troops in hand-to-hand combat. Mmm...I wonder if FMA footwork would give the hunter the edge over a mean, angry, scared 250lb. Russian wild boar with razor sharp tusks? :-) ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Thu, 12 Aug 1999 20:34:13 -0700 (PDT) Subject: eskrima: . ------------------------------ End of Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V6 #334 **************************************** To unsubscribe from this digest, eskrima-digest, send the command: unsubscribe eskrima-digest -or- unsubscribe eskrima-digest your.old@address in the BODY of an email (top line, left justified) addressed to majordomo@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com.
