A Howl etc: Sovann asks: > Could you explain what level of expertise purple belt is in BJJ? How > many years experience? Is it because BJJ is so grueling to practice > or compete in later years (no offense)? Belts in BJJ go: white, blue, purple, brown, black. In my experience, the standards are very high and tend to be more based upon actual skill than time served. For example, in our school, Bob Bass came to the Machados as a former California state wrestling champ and took about 10 years to make black. Because it is a disgrace to lose against a lower belt, many people avoid getting promoted. When I trained in Brazil as a young blue in 1992, in my first roll I got whomped by a white belt-- who had been training for 7 years! Also what often seems to happen is that there are seasoned players who have moved from mat to mat and thus the teacher at a given mat may not feel that they are a product of training with him or that he will be around for long and so the promotion never comes. I consider my purple to be a "geezer's purple" which means that on a good day I can hang with the young blues on the Machados mat-- which is a pretty good one. With the young purples I tend to get thrashed, although occasionally I have my moments. To become the Brazilian National Champ you have to win, well, the Brazilian National Championships. Unlike FMA, as best as I can tell in Brazil there is not a problem with competing organizations and titles mean something. If I'm not mistaken, the BJJ Federation is headed by Carlos (a.k.a. Carlinos) Gracie. This also is the organization that runs the Pan Am games, and the World Championships. The World Championship seems to always be held in Brazil whereas the Pan Am games seems to move around: Irvine CA, Redondo Beach CA, Hawaii as well as Brazil. The adult division goes up to 30 years, 30-40 is the Masters division, and until recently the Senior division began at 40, but I heard that the Senior World Championships this year consider it as beginning at 45-- for which, as I turn 47 on Monday, I also qualify ;-). Obviously, the best players tend to be Brazilian (although the margin is less than it used to be). Many Brazilians cannot afford to fly to the US for a tournament so the level and number of competitors at the Pan Am games tends to suffer a bit. If I can make it to Brazil next year, I imagine that there will be competition. And yes, it is grueling to practice. Injuries can and do happen. On Thursday some fu#$%&ng hyper young idiot tweaked my biceps tendon-- so as I should be dialing it up with my sticks getting ready for the Gathering instead I'm dealing with this %$$^#$%^ injury. I was looking to come in in some really good shape and instead this. Grrrrrrrrrr. My preference would be not to be attacked at all, since that obviously is out the window, we are stuck with dealing with the realities of the situaiton. Under the circumstances you do what you need to do not to get carved at the moment and to hell with tactical positioning. One of the realities is that the thrust may not be a pure straight thrust to begin with. I clumsy thrust can oft times meander in such a way that insisting on going to the outside gate actually throws you into the blade. When that happens take the lesser of the two evils and go inside I tell people that if you have to go into the inside gate of a knifer the NICEST thing you should do is crush the guys throat with your elbow. I have heard many so-called experts tell me "expect to get cut in a knife fight." They are right. If I stand there and try to fight the guy, eventually the odds are going to catch up with me - especially if I try to whomp on him with my fists. they don't have what it takes to stop him before he can twist and cut me. On the other hand an elbow smash into the throat and throwing him headfirst into the wall has always served me real well for making sure a situation doesn't last long enough for him to effectively retaliate. Once I buy distance running also does wonders for keeping him out of knife range. ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Mon, 23 Aug 1999 09:03:22 -0700 (PDT) Subject: eskrima: . ------------------------------ End of Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V6 #349 **************************************** To unsubscribe from this digest, eskrima-digest, send the command: unsubscribe eskrima-digest -or- unsubscribe eskrima-digest your.old@address in the BODY of an email (top line, left justified) addressed to majordomo@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com.
