Is that close? See http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Loge/7691/ I've trained with Guro "Dong" Cuesta for a long time and while he's about an hour from Trenton, training ith him is well worth the trip..If you have the opportunity to train with him.. definitely do so.. I think Steve misinterpreted Ray's questions about the dog eaters. Ray has always treated me and every Pekiti person I know with respect and courtesy. Ray and I have emailed each other on various subjects and our conversations have always been friendly. I have on several occasions offered him an open dinner invitation anytime he is in my area as a small showing of thanks for the service he provides with Eskrima Digest. Steve, one shouldn't read too much into a question. It is possible to disagree with someone on an issue without disliking the person themselves. Gints, my apologies for not getting back to you sooner about Pekiti training in San Jose, CA. I just finished a two day meeting/workout with some of my directors this past weekend and the preparations kept me rather busy. Guro Mike Franciotti has changed jobs and has suspended class in San Jose for the time being. (Mike's info on the Pekiti list needs an update-my fault). I just got off the phone with Mike and he says he should have a better idea of his schedule in about a month. Interested parties can write to him at: Mike Franciotti 1184 Koch Lane San Jose, CA. 95125 As Loki Jorgenson wrote recently, he will be moving to San Francisco next month. I am sure if enough people convey their interest to Loki, he can be persuaded to start a regular class (since he will be new to the area, he will need some help finding a site). Actually most duels were to first blood. And even those cultures died out. here i must disagree - not sure where your getting your information - but look at hamilton / van buren duel ect. - i've seen countless documentaries on duel -- a&e did a week long series on it ect. and duels where to the death - thats why the where eventually outlawed (interesting to note that they werent outlawed until guns gained favor as the weapon of choice in a duel - gun control even back then) - first blood duels were also common. however the only first blood duels i'm aware of where ones of sporting events - whether of not in public or private - it was just a way of testing your skill against another -- without life having to be lost - >> Also, remember that most 'death matches' in the RP were not. Look at how many challenge matches Cacoy Canete fought in defending the Doce Pares group. At 80+, to my knowledge he as still not killed someone in a 'duel', but I also don't believe he ever lost a challenge or a fight. >> remembering the thread on death matches - the was no clear resolution on whether or not they were consider death matches or just sporting events - when guro dan talks about them, he talks about the matches being more like sporting events - not duels of honor - also they were fought with impact - not edged weapons so death didnt have to be so imminent - many times just giving was enough - because once you lost you could no longer teach - you were disgraced. Ever heard of the villabraille fight that he killed someone in the ring?? and that was by accident - i think these matches took on the aura of death matches as a way of hyping the masters - have you ever ASKED GM Cacoy if he fought in a death match? i will the next time i see him -- he comes to the inosanto academy from time to time. so i reject your postulate that there where "death matchs" that didnt result in death -- even saying it sounds ludicrous - or at least an oxymoron - how can you have a death match without death? if you can answer that one - i'll concede the entire aurgument to you steve ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Thu, 26 Aug 1999 23:54:22 -0700 (PDT) Subject: eskrima: yet even more DE stuff > << Just quoting you. At least to me. Perhaps you are to others. It is probably time to drop it and/or take it to private email. FWIW, I had an "interesting" exchange with some Dog Eaters about a year or two ago. I would consistently get spam email from them, or someone claiming to represent them. Usually about one particular person. It was essentially a blast-o-gram of which I was only one of the receivers. I asked several times for them to stop addressing their spam to me, finally threatening them with in no uncertain terms with bodily harm should they continue and should our paths ever cross. I think also uttered some rather unkind remarks about their chosen name at about the same time and also provided my counter views about the person at issue... Interestingly they seemed to like that I threatened them, i.e. stood up to them. They mentioned how much they respected me for telling them exactly what I thought of them and, most importantly, they finally stopped spamming me. :) My threat could have easily been viewed as an insult, especially since it was, yet they didn't seem to mind one bit. My point? Perhaps your original statement was a bit too strongly worded as it seems like some obvious and clear insults are well received if issued in a way that they can understand and relate to. ???
