This can be seen in our language where there is no accurate translation for the word "No". "Hindi" is closer to "not" and "huwag" means "don't", but there's no word that has the finality of "No". > Granted there are various cultures,,, gang culturers, prison cultures, etc. > But when it comes to viable cultures, cultures that make a contribution > in a civilized nation, I know of none in which it is reasonable to kill > a person for an insult. Well said Ray. Even stories about Japanese samurai cutting people in half over perceived insults are questionable. ************************************************************************************************************** Isn't this precisely why Asians are stereotypically non-confrontational??? Centuries of the confrontational types getting cut in half would, I think, lead to most folks learning to avoid confrontation in order to stay whole! Did anyone on the list go to the submission grappling tournament in Abu Dhabi? I heard that you could walk off and leave your $3000 video camera setup in the bleachers and it would be there when you got back because thieves get a hand removed. I think we have to realize that this creedo of acting when insulted comes from a place where insults don't happen often because there is a creedo of acting when insulted... Perhaps if Americans expected to lose a hand if they stole, or incurr violence if they insult, this would be a much nicer country in which to live. He did, however, tell us a story at the last seminar I was at. He said that in '83 (I think that's the right year -- he was 64 at the time), he was challenged to a "death match" by a 55 year old eskrimadore. He checked the legal statutes of the region and found that any and all participants in a "duel" (which, according to the statutes this would have constituted) go to jail ... period. So, he went to the regional magistrate (or whatever government official oversaw the area) and asked if he and this other fellow could put on an "Eskrima Exhibition" match. It was agreed to and everything was made official. There were soldiers and policeman attending the event as spectators. The only people who knew that it was supposed to be a death match were GM Cacoy and the guy who'd challenged him. GM Cacoy said that he hit the guy three times, tapping him once in each temple and butting him hard just under the eye. At that point, the guy gave up. Now, in this particular case, I would guess that there wasn't even a disgrace for the other guy. No one knew that there had been a challenge ... unless he himself had bragged about it to others. Anyway, I did ask GM Cacoy if he had ever lost a fight. He said that, no, in 73 years, he had never lost a fight. I would have to assume that sparring with his brothers/teachers wouldn't have counted as fights :-) Anyway, just an interesting sidenote :-) Later, Mike __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
