I think we have to >realize that this creedo of acting when insulted comes from a place where insults > don't happen often because there is a >creedo of acting when insulted... For me this is not a particularly good reason for ending up injured, dead or in jail. Don't you think your response was a bit over the top. If every time I'd dealt with being insulted by responding violently I'd be dead or in jail. The only time I'll fight is in the protection of myself and my family, nothing else really matters. I find it interesting the air of invincibility nearly all the posts on the digest have (this is over a number of years). Clearly most of us on the digest having fighting ability, many of us have trained in multiple arts over many years BUT this does not mean we will always win. If we are in conflict ALL the time no matter how good we are sooner or latter we will lose. Save your energy, your ability for the times you really need it. The problem with "civilization", it seems to me, is that it becomes less likely for those inclined to hurtful behaviour to restrain the impulse, simply because there is no fear of consequences. [insert rant of your choice on problems with legal/justice system, pros/cons etc] You can't necessarily change how a person thinks or behaves, but you can at least make them think twice about that behaviour if they know they WILL reap what they sow. I don't really want to accidentally be beaten to death with sticks ;) for unknowingly insulting someone, but knowing it is a possibility means I am more aware of my behaviour and how it affects others. However, I would also hope that in a different cultural context I would be granted some tolerance, at least for first-time mistakes - - I learn quick, I promise! I believe everyone should be given a chance/the benefit of the doubt, but I also believe there is a limit. There is a point beyond which one's behaviour should not go, and if it does, that person should accept, and hopefully learn from, the result of their actions, whether it's off to bed with no supper for shaving the dog, or having your throat smashed with an elbow for attempting to rape someone. Once is funny, twice is stupid, three times you get a spanking.(traditional) Once you go to jail, twice we chop off your head, three times never happens. (revised) as with anything, a sense of proportion is necessary when suggesting possible courses of action - be assured that I have one and I'm not afraid to use it :) just some opinions, Roaring Girl * Purveyor Of Fine Books * Beater Of Bodhrans * Smiter Of The Wicked * * Owned By Angus, Most Elegant And Pleasing Of Cats * ------------------------------ From: Luis Pellicer Date: Mon, 30 Aug 1999 09:40:19 +0800 Subject: [none] >Interestingly they seemed to like that I threatened them, i.e. stood up to >them. I think it is marvelous to get in touch with so many people sharing the same interests. I am from Romania, an East European country where martial arts are legally practised since very few years ( '90- '91 ) . Under the comunists , all MA were forbidden and people were sent to prison for studying MA even alone , after books . Having foreign books was also a crime then .... Now is better but we have very few informations on MA . There are popular MA like Karate Shotokan, Kyokushin, Wushu , Aikido , Jujutsu, TKD but we have no schools of FMA , for example . I am one of the only black belts in Kenpo in Romania and I represent a small group of MA practionners interested in FMA . Can anybody help us no matter how ? ( Advice , books , tapes ) We have difficulties ordering foreign videos because the medium salary in romania is about $100, unfortunately ... I hope I haven't waist your time here Best regards Cris ------------------------------ From: digital-man@home.com Date: Fri, 27 Aug 1999 19:08:58 -0700 Subject: eskrima: Tucson, AZ Escrima Tournament I'm looking for an upcoming Escrima tournament in Tucson, AZ.
