Ray Terry, PO Box 110841, Campbell, CA 95011 FMA@MartialArtsResource.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Kalki Date: Mon, 06 Sep 1999 18:08:58 -0500 Subject: eskrima: Beware the Effete Knifer > i wouldnt ascribe someone who is effete as dangerous Be careful amigo ... a blade is a blade :-) Whether we "ascribe" someone who is effete as dangerous or not does not determine the reality of how dangerous they might be. Just a bit of friendly advice. When I was a kid (whoa!) I remember being told about a "guy" in our neighborhood who was visibly ++effeminate (and I do mean ++) in mannerism (and er, uh, some behaviors) but could tear the average bear apart with or without a knife. Seems he was one of those kids for whom reform school and jail had been a way of life. He'd pass someone a "shiv" in a flash hombre. Similarly, some tough-talking/acting/appearing guys can turn out to be wusses (nothing but attitude). The "most dangerous" people that I've met don't advertise it, i.e., you'd never know what they were cpable of. I once interviewed for a job with the State Department ... interviewer was a Special Agent whom I thought looked "lame" ... he was slough-footed, wore glasses, and didn't look like he could do much of anything except read. How-some-ever ... he was Special Agent WhateverHisNameWas and he was a kung fu ace. Messed with some of my friendships when he went around D.C. playing spook with my life. All things considered, I'm glad I didn't get that job :-) Old saying: "Cain't jedge a book by lookin' at de covuh." If something does not appear dangerous, it has already gotten past your guard. A kris is the wavy sword we all know and the kali is a broader version of it. I also noticed the edges are different, I'll write back when I find a way to describe it better. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ From: Bladewerks@aol.com Date: Mon, 6 Sep 1999 23:57:19 EDT Subject: eskrima: 13th warrior everyone,if you get the chance go see the recent release "the 13th warrior". Sweat More-Bleed Less ------------------------------ From: "Haru Taka" Date: Mon, 06 Sep 1999 23:28:05 CDT Subject: eskrima: Last point on "Racial Dynamics" My point is simple: First of all, you can't expect to know a stranger's culture (e.g., fight reactions) simply from looking at him or her. All you can know are physical characteristics (not "race"), including clothing. If you go around infering behavioral responses from people becuase you think their appearance tells you something about their culture, then you're only going to get yourself in trouble one day. Second of all, I was trying to make the point that a more effective strategy to fighting (at least in my experience) is to expect any kind of reactions from any person at any time. True, it is good to know what kind of reactions are most common in the fighting world, but I think good way to employ this knowledge in fighting stratgey is to expect these common fighting reactions, and more, from ANY opponent regardless of what they look like and what you think that means. That's all I have to say on this issue. I hope that I have not offended you Crafty. I agree that their are some pretty stupid people out there who will want to challenge other people because of what they look like, be it "racial" perception, height, overall size, or whatever. And I think that it is important to be aware of these reasons that people have for starting a fight. Whether you look your opponents in terms of "race" might be an important issue as long as they adhere to the particular dynamics (i.e., cultural norms) that people may associate with your opponent's "racial" category. So, you're absolutely right, Crafty. I think we should be aware of these possibilities, but I do not think of people in terms of "race," nor do infer how people will behave by just looking at their physical appearance. I prefer expecting anything all the time (It just works for me). I apologize if I missunderstood your point. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ From: Jivita@aol.com Date: Tue, 7 Sep 1999 03:03:30 EDT Subject: eskrima: Re: Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V6 #375 In a message dated 9/6/99 3:20:44 PM Pacific Daylight Time, eskrima-digest-owner@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com writes: << The half-and-half blade, known as a kalis in the Philippines, is not a kris. It is a Filipino adaptation of the kris, but there are no half-and-half blades among the kris of indonesia, where it originated. >> My understanding is that the term Kalis is regional, as is the term Sundang. They did not apply to certain blade styles. As an FYI the Tausug terms for Straight, Half and Half and Fully Waved Pilipino Kris swords are Kalis Tulid, Kalis Taluseko and Kalis Seko. All are called Kalis.... I'm no expert so maybe one will chime in. (Are you lurking out there Cecil?) By the way, since language is simply a means to an end. That end being understanding; I'm sure the general term of Pilipino Kris is understood by all and quite different from the Indonesian Kris or Keris. It's all a matter of degrees. If I say Kris, you know I'm talking of a wavy blade knife/sword of some sort. I can then explain if it is Pilipino, Indonesian, etc.. If it makes you feel better though, I can start referring to my Tausug Kris as a Kalis Seko. I'm afraid no one but a Tausug would understand me though. Regards. You might check with Tom. I think the book was due out awhile back. BTW, Cacoy's stories are great. As a former history teacher, his memory for dates, locations, those involved, etc. is excellent. I was lucky to get to hear many of them while sitting at his kitchen table on many a Sunday afternoon. My instructors & fellow practitioners performed for the class on Saturday, which was the Gurkha march with the Irish music playing in background. A fellow student got to record parts of the lectures during the clinic...he was limited since he was an actual participant in the class. I must say that there were some extraordinary comments Dr. Gyi made in regards to Guro Dan...the mutual respect they have for each other is unbelievable. Hopefully I'll make it to the next one.
