Jason does have a nice weapon's collection. > Hi Jason (and Chris) The intent of my original post was humour. I wasn't trying to moralise with you, only to inject a bit of lateral thinking into your post (as the Ray the Grand PoohBar does on occasion) - I didn't expect as much response as it got - maybe I touched a raw nerve. However I do think that this highlights a deeper issue - how much of our waking lives do we spend as martial artists training for the fight that for the majority of us will never - or very seldom happen, compare this with how much of our waking lives do we spend as "quality time" with the people with whom we have chosen to spend the rest of our lives with. Let (s)he who is without sin cast the first flame 8-) - I know I'm as guilty as the next guy... BTW - Best wishes Jason, I hope you and your fiance have as wonderful a time as my wife and I did and if I ever find myself in your neck of the woods I'd very much like to see your collection 8-) Jon... ------------------------------ From: "Jon Howard" Date: Mon, 13 Sep 1999 12:11:02 +0100 Subject: eskrima: A question about small knives... Hi there. This question is primarily aimed ay Tuhon McGrath, but I would welcome comments from anyone with an opinion on the subject ( "opinions are like a**holes, everybody has one" *grin*). A lot has been said lately about the use of small knives, what would you consider a functional size for a small knife, are there any distinctions between small and very-small knives. It is my understanding that in England folding knives with blades longer than 2.5" are illegal to be carried. Could somebody clarify this for me ? Respectfully yours Jon Howard. ------------------------------ From: David Fulton Date: Mon, 13 Sep 1999 11:19:16 -0400 Subject: eskrima: Re: What to do on a honeymoon Michael Koblic (quoting me): >>I have to agree with Jon here. In other words, I realize that sometimes other things are more important and must come first .... "life" isn't always as convenient as we'd like after all. I was merely suggesting that maybe he could take a break from it for a few days for what is obviously a special occasion. It is only a few days after all. Now vacations are a different story. They're for relaxing and what better way to relax than to train. I train daily on vacation. Of course, it now been established that he wants to train because his future wife will be off doing other things herself, so this is all irrelevant. When we train, we say the number to the beginner, and he/she give the proper angle primarily with their right stick. That is if we are both hold the stick say, in our right hand. Would the number of the angle change if he/she hold their stick in their left hand and you are holding your weapon in your right hand? Just wanting to know your opinion. We have tried both. They give the exact angle they did with stick in right hand (I call a #1 angle, and they feed my angle #1 which is really a left handers #2) or, they mirror the movement on opposite side. Example: The left hander feeds their #1 angle which is the right handers angle #2. What works best for your school. Thanks, and keep up the good work on the digest. Dave] Dave, I had struggled with this for many years. After some time in FMA you find that not everyone's numbering system is the same, for example a #2 from one style may be completely different from a #2 of another. There also seems to be some confusion in regards to a forehand and backhand being the opposite for a right handed versus a left handed practitioner. For the sake of historical content I wasn't willing to abandon the numbering system until I began studying under GM Ramiro Estalilla in the Kabaroan system. He broke down the strikes in three categories; Perpendicular, Horizontal and Diagonal (PHD) strikes. All strikes are called out from the point of view of the person delivering the strike. Imagine a line traveling from the center of the head down between the legs (perpendicular), and a line traveling horizontally across the center of the body. This cross produces four quadrants and each quadrant is bisected by a diagonal line. Now, in regards to nomenclature, regardless of whether your right handed or left handed, any strike executed above the diagonal line is named "over" any strike below the hor. line is called "under". Any strike right of the perpendicular line is called "right" and any strike left is called "left Any perpendicular strike coming from above the hor. line is called "Vertical or Verti" and any Perpendicular strike from below the hor. line is called "Radical or Radi" Any horizontal strike is called a "Horizontal or Hor" strike. So all strikes break down into Verti Right, Over Right, Hor Right, Under Right and Radi Right, similarly for the left side. Now regardless of whether I execute the strike from my right side or left side, the angle of the strike does not change, so an Over Right is still an Over Right. (For clarity like to use the term "reverse" if I execute right side strike from my left guard). If the practitioner is to execute a block it comes from the perspective of the deliverer. So I will ask my student to deliver an Over Right and I will demonstrate the various blocks or merges from that perspective. Anyway, that just my two cents and I'm not claiming it's the best, just that (as you ask) works best for our school.
