That's where its long canine teeth come as they sever the neck vertebrae. Sorry,I couldn't pass up the opportunity to sling some trivia. Probnably not a very high survival trait. :>) ------------------------------ From: pjm@buffnet.net Date: Tue, 14 Sep 1999 13:17:59 -0400 Subject: eskrima: RE: Polarm vs Sword "My understanding from others who know (or are supposed to) is that longer weapons ("pole arms") are a)more effective and b)easier to use. I am lead to believe that even a skilled swordsman had difficulty fighting against a spear/halberd." I know how much the members of the list love to hear SCA examples used here but quite frankly the only place I've had a chance to fight polearm versus sword is in the SCA. The polearm, glave and halberd are very effective if you can keep you attacker at an appropriate long distance. In most melees the long range pole weapons are defended by a shield wall of foot soldiers armed with sword and shield. In one on one combat the polearm fighter must keep his opponent at a far range where the weapon is most effective. If the opponent breaches this range the polearm fighter can only bash at the swordsman with the wooden shaft. As an experiment I have gone single sword versus polearm using FMA stick techniques (talk about a confused polearmsman) I was able to get an initial block with the sword, and check and grab with the open hand, followed by a mad dash the length of the polearm where I was able to ring his helm like a carnival bell. We did this a number of times alternating styles of block against the pole untill I became very tired from the mad dash down the pole. Post script, this worked because I was faster than the polearm fighter. In instances where the polearm fighter can keep the swordsman at range and not allow him inside the swordsman can be cut down to size. Last week a particular fighter with the speed and cornering ability of a corner back kept me at such a distance and took my legs or head whenever he wanted. He and Ed Melaugh have one of the best knife defense systems I've ever seen. Mostly done from mugging suitations where the knife is already against your abdomen, throat or back. Very realistic stuff. Is there such thing as an "allowable" length that is not illegal? Can one carry a concealed knife? What about sticks? Any information on other states is also welcome... There are only so many "angles" that a strike can come from, however on the same note, there are a countless numbers of strikes. Most systems have about 8 striking/slashing angles based on cutting a pie, but on that circle there are 360 degrees/angles. One thing I always tell students is that the angle familiarization is used for your defense not your offense. "Use the angles of attack to limit your opponent not yourself." In other words, everything your opponent throws at you MUST fall into an angle of attack. That doesn't mean that you have to think, "OK, deflect, monitor, strike angle whatever", it should be deflect, monitor, strike(theoretically). Don't fuss about what angle your attack just came from, concentrate on landing it. Chad Hawaii __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
