Perhaps. Not sure what case law tells us. Ray Terry Mr. Terry is correct...it's very hazy. To the extent that a security officer on his way to work in Thousand Oaks (in Ventura County just northwest of LA County) was arrested one night for having his nightstick in his car. Apparently it was his night off or some such technicality.....but it held up in court. Because of the influx of Asian gangs in the 70s in L.A., Sacramento, Fresno, San Francisco and at that time just beginning in San Diego the authorities all fought for and won a 'zero tolerance' approach. I've had dozens of officers approach me over the years for training against stick type weapons.....they are really nervous about them and have actually in some cases given them more credit than is due. b ------------------------------ From: "Dawn & Creight Hatico" Date: Thu, 16 Sep 1999 18:32:58 PDT Subject: eskrima: Vidclips! I want to congratulate them and wish them all the best here on the list. Wanted others to know, so they could send their blessings to them as well. I'm sorry law school is keeping me from the bash, but I hope they have a super weekend. It seems to me that the founding fathers never meant for it to get to the point were it is against the law to defend yourself or take precautions. God given inalienable right to "life, liberty...." I'm going to try to find a nice heavy duty metal pen to supplement my "empty hand" techniques. It is too bad that we can't get some common sense self-defense laws established. Any future politicians? If anyone ever determines the definitive answer or blade carry laws in SF,CA let me know. I believe that someone has confused the rights defined under Article 5, which concerning stop and search by Military and Police agencies. The ECHR may effect the UK in relation to some of its anti-terrorist legislation but the chances of causing the Government to review the laws in relation to knife carrying are pretty thin. Any comments or info would be greatly appriciated. > I hold my second degree black belt in Isshinryu from A.J. Advincula. This is not a commercial for him, it is just that I have a lot of respect for him and his no nonsense approach to the martial arts. He is as you say the real deal. His first system as a boy was FMA. I believe it was a largo mano style. He holds a high degree in Isshinryu and many Isshinryu groups look to him as their technical advisor as he had spent more time on Okinawa studying under Shimabuku than any other American. As for his FMA. He does not do a lot of the fancy moves, but I assure you he knows what he is doing and does it well. There are several tapes out on Panther video by him. Some people might look at the tapes and figure this is just basic stuff. May be, but it does work. He is a marine and has trained Marines. He has had real combat experiance and some street experiance. Advincula has taught many marines hand to hand combat. Many of his miltary students went to Vietnam. There is a story about one of his students in Vietnam. Part of this students equipment was the machette which was sharpened partway on the back side to create a double edge weapon. One night when the marine camp was being over run, this student (don't know his name or why he did not have a firearm at the time) was able to kill several VC as they came around a corner of a building. The technique used was a straight thrust to center mass of the body which immediately dropped the VC. Unfortunately, one VC came around the corner out of range of the sword and fired his automatic weapon dropping the marine. The marine was lucky and survived the automatic fire. The several VC that received the straight thrust did not survive. As an as side, when talking about which is better Thrust or Slash, I think about this marine and the fact that the VC he stabbed dropped instantly. I am not sure a slash to the body would have had the same effect? Who knows? I am sure every body has opinions. Back to Sensei Advincula. He still trains and teaches. In addition to FMA and Isshinryu he has studied other styles and teaches another style in addition to Eskrima and Isshinryu. I would have to go back and look the other style up, the other style is a form of kung fu. Gary Hudgins ------------------------------ From: Sidney525@aol.com Date: Fri, 17 Sep 1999 07:16:33 EDT Subject: eskrima: Military service My view of military service is a little different than the views previously stated. My experience, and the experiences of others, including Korean & Vietnam vets, that I am friends with, is that it is more bs than bullets & blood. Meaning that particularly in the peace time army you are more likely to learn about how to keep your barracks room clean than about combat. My Vietnam vet friend told me how he actually extended his tour in 'Nam just so he could finish his military service there so he wouldn't have to deal with any Stateside rear echelon nonsense. Now things might differ in some of the more specialized units Marine Force Recon, Special Forces etc. However, these are very hard units to get into, mainly because of the red tape. Also, what I learned about weapons and warrior stuff during my military service (infantry) in the early 1990's, including a tour of Korea and patrols in the DMZ, was really minimal. Would I do it again ? Well, I love my country but I'm not too crazy about the army. You may also want to check out the James Dunnigan book, "Waging War" is the title (I believe) He got it right.
