Waking up at 4am in the morning is not an easy task (if you are like me and believe that waking up before 1pm is the 8th deadly sin) but this morning it was worth it! It was a beautiful spring morning and just perfect to do some training on the beach. The sun rising over the ocean warming the sand slightly making it perfect to work with sticks and throws. For those out there that have not been beach training before or those who have not been able to do it for a long time I strongly sugguest that you take the effort and feel the magic of training on the beach. Good luck, I think. I was detained at the metal detector in Seattle for 10 min because I had one of those little one inch "butterfly knives" on my key-chain. In Hong Kong I had a walking stick that wouldn't fit into my suitcase taken from me as I boarded the plane, and given back to me when I got off. On the other hand, I flew out of Shanghai with a collapsible sword in my carry on. You just never know. Traveling with anything that can be a weapon is like playing poker in a game where the rules change after you bet. A guy with nunchaku in his back pocket went through and boarded the plane with no hassle. This was before every Tom, Dick and Harry knew what nunchaku were and before airport security was anything like it is today. (Bruce Lee movies had not even come out yet.) About 10 years ago, I carried my sticks on a flight in and out of Chicago in a pool cue bag. As they came out of the x-ray conveyor belt, I heard one person say "pool cue". I had no problems. Your "luck" might be similar to the situation where a police officer will give a warning for speeding if you are clean cut, normal looking, or do not appear to be out of place, vs. where if you are out of place (white male, long hair, unkempt dress in a predominately black neighborhood at 3:00 am speeding) you might get the speeding ticket, no seat belt, no tail light, field sobriety test, and if you give consent, a search of the car. [This is not a debate on different people or cultures only a recognition that "people" make the decision as to when or how an ordinance or law is to be enforced. By the way, Advincula made the comment to me one time. It is a felony to carry nunchaku in California but only a misdemeanor to carry an assault rifle. Don't know if this is accurate. Most of the carry laws (is it two inches or three inches, locked blade, etc.) are ignored until you actually have to use the thing. Then depending on the situation, you may have no problems or be facing jail. This does not apply to security measures in public buildings where you are searched before you go in. Those guys don't let you go through with anything. PS. If you are going to a public building don't park your rented Rider Truck anywhere near the place. Gary H. My two cents again. ------------------------------ From: Scott Wiggins Date: Sat, 18 Sep 1999 17:31:15 +0100 Subject: eskrima: Re: PTK: Small knife grips In message <001b01befe86$2198fe20$b26cdbd0@bill>, BILL MCGRATH writes >Jon Howard asked, > >"A lot has been said lately about the use of small knives, what would >you >consider a functional size for a small knife, are there any >distinctions >between small and very-small knives. It is my understanding that in >England >folding knives with blades longer than 2.5" are illegal to be carried. >Could somebody clarify this for me ?" Folding/Any knives over this length are illegal to carry unless they are required for your trade, e.g. Butcher, Fishmonger, Farmer etc. > A knife that is legal to carry can still be confiscated with little or no reason as well, although you won't be prosecuted for it. Having said that, you are always on a loser here as the bad guys are obviously not concerned with the law.
