Does anyone have the specifics, such as date, time, location, contact information, etc.? Thanks in advance. ___________________________________________________________________ Get the Internet just the way you want it. Free software, free e-mail, and free Internet access for a month! Gathering I've been attending the Gatherings now for several years and have been impressed with the overall comraderie and respect shown by the fighters at each one. I was looking forward to the first "catfight" between the woman from Switzerland and Minerva. At first, both women looked pretty good with their stickfighting skills and even on the ground. Unfortunately, Minerva allegedly did a no-no when she bit her opponent in the breast. When the bout was over, everyone was shocked as the woman from Switzerland managed to spout off a few expletive deleteds at Minerva, the first time I've heard such words or seen such conduct in the Gathering. Minerva had the gall to gloat over her supposed "victory." Later, when Minerva, decked out like Xena, rode back in on her horse for what she expected to be a triumphant march, she was roundly booed by numerous attendees. I'm sure that Crafty Dog has more insider info on what happened and might want to add his own reflections on the incident. Personally, although this first catfight didn't get off to a good start, I think we should continue making efforts to enable women fighters to participate. ___________________________________________________________________ Get the Internet just the way you want it. I liked the technique section in the end of the book, though. Mabuhay Ang Eskrima! What really > happened?? > I also understand there are lots of staff fights,..(Big Irv,..etc.), is this > becoming popular for any particular reason?? > Tom Furman tcsno@mciworld.com The bite did happen and will be discussed further in the report on the Sept Gathering which I am in the process of writing. As for staff, this was my third Gathering fighting staff and this time one of my students went twice with staff against a student of one of Big Erv's Harimau Silat teachers. Given the increased level of danger in staff fights (I heard that there may have been a broken ear drum-- I have tried to confirm, but there has been no answer when the phone rings-- maybe he can't hear it?!?) I suspect that there will always be less of these than stickfights. I remember once that someone related to me having met Sled Dog and asked him about the early days of the Dog Brothers and that his reply was "We're just some guys who showed up." Please forgive me a moment of immodesty, but I think it is a lot more to show up for something that you've or anyone else never seen done and that's what the case was with the Original DBs. Once people saw the DB vids, it became much easier to find players and the event has grown to what it is. Now that people are seeing staff fights once again it is getting not quite as hard to find players-- but as I say, these fights can be pretty dangerous. Woof, Crafty Dog ------------------------------ From: Bladewerks@aol.com Date: Tue, 28 Sep 1999 17:08:58 EDT Subject: eskrima: gathering Im sorry i cant remember the names of the women who fought at the Sept 18the gathering, please forgive me if you are out there. It was an "intreesting" match, the first i have seen of two women who have warrior spirit on a good leval."Black Xena" as she was called was is superior condiction as anyone could tell by looking at her. What she lacked in stickfighting skills she mad up for in physical condictioning and fighting spirit. The other lady,Minerva i think, she was older by some 10 years i would estimate but still in great shape, she pocessed a little more "stick skill" but was a little out classed when it came to pure strength. I cant claim to remember the fight extreamly well since my head was still ringing from Eric's destruction of me.But best I can remember Black Xena quickly took the match to the ground and was on top of Minerva for ohh..45 sec.when Minerva was able to reverse and get in somewhat of a more advantagious position..something like a sidemount if i remember correctly. It was about this time that the 2:00 time limit expired. When Minerva got up SHE WAS PISSED...she said that Black Xena had bitten her on the breast,.of course this wasnt something that could be "inspected" or looked at so i assume that everyone took her word for it...;) I think the problem was that Black Xena was not able to come out of "Charecter" of her Princess Warrior mode. This combined with her not being totally familer with the written and unwrtten "rules". Of course im sure that there is someone out there on E-D that was there who could add to this observation.Perhaps Guro Marc would elaborate.
