I have heard several times that Ngo Cho Kun is the forerunner of Goju-Ryu Karate-Do, and that when most people see Ngo Cho Kun for the first time, they are shocked at how similar it is to Goju-Ryu. I hold a black belt in Goju-Ryu, and would love to find out more about this system of Kung Fu. The event was not taken seriously from the beginning. >Also, as an added plus, she promises to wear her "Red Sonja" chain mail >bikini (fans of >"Conan the Barbarian" comic books will >understand!) Yes, it was well understood. I’m not sure Linda understood that instead of an opportunity to test her fighting skill, she has signed up to be a side-entertainment, a little sexy-spicy-cutie something in between serious matches of the Big Brothers. Poor woman. As for Ms. Adams: Did Guro Crafty or Top Dog ever consider a riding around in a Roman chariot in a string tanga at the gathering? I seriously doubt it. So, with all my respect to the Dog Brothers for their enormous contribution to opening up the MA community and for demonstrating the significance of cross-training and free sparring.... please-please, do not give ground to a##holes who regard female fighters as pussy(cat)s. In this book he spoke of "widely >respected masters". He mentioned one name which I >confess I'm not familiar with... Islao Romo. Mr >Wiley said.... "... the late Islao Romo was said >to be unbelievable, and eyewitness accounts attest >to his beating Felicissimo Dizon, among other >revered masters, in challenge matches......" > >Can anyone provide more details on Mr Romo? Is >there a system which is associated with him? Are >there well known students from his lineage? And.. >what other revered masters did he beat in these >matches? > According to my old sources, the illustriuous Romo family was the most influential Escrima family in central Cebu, while the Saavedra family was most influential in south Cebu (later switched to Canette) and the Ilustrisimo family in north Cebu. (BTW, these are the geographies of some old Cebuans. Some refer to Cebu as a part of central Visayas. eg. north Cebu includes Bantayan and Bohol islands to some old folks). I have heard this story of Islao Romo defeating the mentioned escrimador from a few sources, in particular, the old folks. I can't say whether it is true as I was not there to see it! I am only quoting witnesses, just as anybody in the Digest could be quoting their sources too. Tatang Ilustrisimo was familiar with the mentioned escrimador, and also with= the Romo and Saavedra families in his youth as the 3 Arnis families were friendly to each other and have no conflict between them, according to Tatang. To find out more, I would refer any queries about the Romo family to Romy Macapagal via Luis (pellicer@ibahn.net) and get directions from there as he seems to have access to many sources north central and south.
